2013 Football Season Tickets
"Early next week our football season ticket holders will receive emails requesting renewals for the 2013 season. The email blast will be followed by a regular mail request to assure everyone receives the appropriate information. All of our 13,000 season ticket holders will see a slight increase in season ticket prices. Some will be requested to go through a reseating process similar to the original seating process two years ago. Please let me explain the reasoning behind these very necessary revisions.
When we originally set season ticket prices more than three years ago, we anticipated several seasons playing football either as an independent or as a Southland Conference member—hoping someday to become a member of a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conference. We set our ticket prices accordingly. But as you know, the FBS conference realignment wheels keep spinning and UTSA will enter Conference USA (C-USA) this summer. That is after already spending one year in the Western Athletic Conference. Our new season ticket plan offers seven levels ranging from $60 to $1,325. There’s a price level for just about every pocketbook. And the more expensive levels more closely reflect FBS pricing levels—rather than the Southland price levels anticipated three years ago.
When we began the ticket pricing and section allocation process, we had no prior purchasing patterns to follow. Instead of requiring an up-front donation to purchase our best season tickets, we chose to bundle the Roadrunners Athletic Fund (RAF) donation, ticket cost and some other benefits into our ticket price. The best seats demand the highest prices and include the largest RAF donations. Even our contracted suite purchase prices include sizable RAF donations. In short we used the “Happy Meal” approach—one stop shopping for tickets, donations and other benefits.
When it came time to assign ticket prices to individual Alamodome seating sections, we had to make calculated guesses how many Roadrunner fans would respond to the various bundled price levels. In retrospect our ticket and development staff made very good predictions. But in a couple of areas, we missed. Response to the Founders, Premier and Charter Levels was greater than anticipated. We anticipated a reseating process following the second year and that time has arrived. Season ticket holders in Sections 111, 112 and 113 will be required to reselect their seats according to Loyalty Points earned through RAF donations, season ticket purchases and other considerations. All of the impacted season ticket holders will receive emails this week and are encouraged to call RAF managers to discuss these revisions.
More than 90 percent of our current season ticket customers will be able to retain their current seats without going through a reseating process. The season ticket holders most impacted include those in the upper and lower portions of Section 112. Each of you will receive a personal phone call from an RAF representative during the next two weeks. Anyone else requesting additional information about prices after receiving your renewal notices is encouraged to call the Ticket Office at 210-458-UTSA (8872) to discuss your personal ticket arrangements for 2013. If you would like to discuss the reseating and ticket price plan with me, I am clearing my calendar on Monday, December 10 to respond to your emails and phone calls. Please contact me at 210-458-4444 or Lynn.Hickey@utsa.edu if you have questions after receiving your renewal information.
The seating revisions being made are in response to actual season ticket purchases the past two years. With two years of data, the move to C-USA and the tremendous non-conference schedule next season—Oklahoma State and Houston—we felt this year was the appropriate time to make ticket price and seating adjustments. Our promise to those impacted by the reseating is that there will be not be another reseating for football for at least the next four seasons (2013-2016). As we have seen during the rapidly changing football and conference alignment environment the past three years, it is not advisable to make commitments any longer than four years. We apologize for the inconveniences and hope to remain in constant contact with you throughout the reseating and price adjustment process."
