It is nice to see this commitment to a defensive change right after the season and Coach's reasoning for the change. Should be exciting.

This may be petty to some....but I for one am sick of McGee compaing everything to the SEC. You are a head coach in CUSA and it took you a whole season of defensive suckage to figure that out???

Maybe you aren't the coach we thought you were...

I applaud him for adjusting.

Everyone uses their previous experiences to determine things.

Everything in college football is compared to the SEC if you haven't noticed... except UAB football

Yes! And when teams start running more against us, go back to a 4-3. You have to adapt from team to team.

It's good to hear ideas on how to improve our defense. After all, it's our defense that has cost us game after stinking game.

He's adjusting his defense to C-USA, he needs to scout sun belt teams to make sure the same rules apply. I'd hate to have a great Big East defense while we r still in C-USA

Wow. A coach acknowledged that what he thought would work didn't and is working on a course correction.

Damned refreshing.

My concern with a 3-4 is that you desperately need a big (315+ lb) nose tackle to anchor that line, which is hard to get, given the scarcity at the position. We have a hard enough time getting tackles big enough to play in a 4-3. Maybe Roscoe Byrd could develop into that guy for us (?).

I think guys like Diaheem Watkins and Chris Walton could excel in the OLB/rush end role of a 3-4 though.

They do. Most non-AQ teams run some sort of spread.

The 3-3-5 we ran vs Marshall may be where it starts. Using a hybrid LB/DB allows for a play-to-play transition to a 3-4. Slaughter comes to mind.

Well this also explains why we had more success at So Car & Ohio St than in C-USA

One of this coach's most endearing traits. His honesty and willingness to admit when he's wrong.

Boyett also needs to drop 15 pounds and move back to the outside.

The 3/4 is more flexible than the 4/3, it is highly effective against the run and pass, easier to transition from 3/4 to 4/3 (week to week/in game/play to play), and you get more speed on the field.

He could have simply made the changes, but instead he chose to protect his DC, inform the fans, and get the message out to recruits. Pretty savvy for a first year head coach.

RE: Champlin: UAB looking to change defensive scheme
Against the spread, a big NT is not that big of a deal as those teams will normally pass first. We need more speed on D and hybrid LB/DBs to make it work. The big NT will become useful for the token BCS opponents we play
