some news about Maryland going to the Big Ten:
http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Sour...rious.html

how does this relate to Big East?
1- Rutgers goes with Maryland to Big Ten.
2- UConn presumably goes to ACC as replacement

That would leave BE with 10 teams in 2014.
Temple
USF
Louisville
Cincy
UCF
Memphis
SMU
Houston
Boise
San Diego St

I think contract wise, BE will have to be 12 in 2014. This would explain why they tried to get Navy to join in 2014. Now, there's a BOT meeting Tuesday at ECU. That would be 11, with another western school. Then in 2015, Navy joins east, and a 2nd western school.

RE: some smoke
It would be nice if the Big Ten took two ACC teams and then the Big XII took two more and then voila! The Big East can then be lock for fifth best conference.

I would be stunned if Maryland officials ponied up 50 Million to switch athletic conferences. I'm not sure that stranger things have happened. That would be about the strangest by a public institution.

It is gonna fall apart.

Well. The PAC-12 and Big 12 need to go to 14. Maybe it isn't too late for Idaho and Boise to combine schools so we have something to show the PAC-12 in the academic areas.

Please, this is just like FSU and Clemson rumors coming from WVU. No way no how does a school do far in debt okay a 50 million dollar exit fee!

well, for one , I think Under Armour would help some of the exit fee for Maryland. Maybe get a loan from Big Ten, payable in future revenues...... The fact things are coming from Big Ten side as well is very telling.....

And, it would do a pretty big share of dominos.

Gawd no! Let the madness end! Can't imagine how Maryland can imagine forking over $50 Mil to go to the B1G. Unless they are able to weasel out of it with some lesser agreement.

it's possible- I know they didn't vote for it. Maybe there's something there legally they don't have to pay the full 50 million???

Rutgers and Maryland to the Big 10 don't make any sense at all except as 2 new, large states in which to expand and sell the Big 10 network.

Other than that, you can't tell me that Rutgers and Maryland increase the size of the Big 10 pie by more than they eat.

the Big Ten network can't be discounted. Maryland gets them into the DC area and Rutgers NYC area.....

So would the Boston College guys finally tell Uconn to come on in? Or do they think outside the box and grab Louisville?

But I get the Big 10 network in Houston. I bet it's already in NYC and DC areas.

the subscriber rate goes way up when you are in a Big Ten State compared to not in a Big Ten State. Something like from .11 to .88 per subscriber I think...

50 million exit fee is a hell of an obstacle, and I would hate to lose Rutgers or UConn... I hope this doesn't pan out, the Big East is already CUSA 2.0, no need to reinforce it to the point where it becomes a literal CUSA 2.0.

Well if underarmor is so helpful then why did Maryland have to drop sports because of it's athletic deficit? No way does the state itself allow them to take on this new debt.

This is all coming from Penn St folks. That should tell you everything you need to know. Not even PSU administrators, just bloggers. Haven't we learned anything yet?

The B1G doesn't expand unless the team coming in brings a whole lot of money with them. Maryland does NOT bring a lot of money. No one cares about their FB.

RE: some smoke
I'm reserving judgment mightily on this rumor, although the National Football Post has a lot more credibility than the sites spreading rumors last night. Let's put it this way: Maryland (and possibly Rutgers) makes much more sense than the FSU/Clemson to the Big 12 rumors. Maryland definitely has enough pull in the DC/Baltimore region to get the Big Ten Network onto basic cable there,
which would bring in a ton of revenue. The question for the Big Ten would be more about whether Rutgers has enough pull to do the same in the NY/NJ region (or if a PSU/MD/Rutgers combo plus Michigan and the rest of the Big Ten is enough to get at least a Philly-level carriage rate there for the BTN). So, Maryland makes sense for the Big Ten, and I think the Big Ten makes sense for Maryland as an institution, but the issue is whether it makes *enough* sense for the Big Ten to get bigger and for Maryland to pay that exit fee and leave the league that it founded.

Not what some Notre Dame people are saying. BC hates UConn. Remember Norte Dame and who they may want.
