RE: Article: Time For BYU To Think Hard
I was living in San Diego, way back in the day, when the Marshall Faulk team bolted out to a 28 point lead in the Murph, only to see BYU come back and tie it. Although painful, it was pretty clear, that day forward, that SDSU could compete with them, ups and downs of each program aside.

We had a basketball feud going on at the time, but the football game was not even close to a rivarly game. Back in those days UC's rival was Louisville and Miami(OH).
If I am being honest, a considerable number of our football fanbase has jumped on in the last decade or less. They don't see Memphis as a rival for UC in any capacity. That's not to say that it can't potentially happen, but it will take a little time for that to bloom.
I went to UC betwwen 1986=1991 and have followed the football team since this time. I call the game with Memphis a rivalry, but this is probably an overstatement. The fans did not necessarily get jacked about the game, rather, it was one of the most competitive games on our schedule. During this time period Cincy played comparable games with Memphis, Houston, UAB, Tulane, and Louisville. There was not alot of banter between the fan groups, but we played exciting close football games.

Very few BYU fans would consider anyone but Utah a rival in either major sport. There's a lot of history with schools like SDSU, but the Utah rivalry is so intense that it leaves little room for anything else.

Well we played 30 times, dating back to 1966. That ought to count for something.
Sure...means you played 30 games....doesn't make those games RIVALRY games.
Heck...some teams have played others over 50, 60, 70 plus times...doesn't make them rivalry games.

RE: Article: Time For BYU To Think Hard
I was a UC student in the mid-90's....Hoops was HUGE at UC then, football not so much. I considered memphis/UofL/XU our big hoops rivalries. Football was UofL/MiamiOH and I didn't see Memphis as a big football rivalry, but that may have been because although I went to the football games, football was something you did then to pass the time until until hoops season started.
I'm happy to get back on the hardwood vs Memphis and who knows, football vs Memphis may develop into something big too.
It just takes a few big games...we had zero with Pitt before joining the BE and although we didn't have enough time to develop into true rivals, we had two season ending games vs Pitt that basically decided the BE champ (2008 @UC) and the famous 2009 game @Pitt. UC won both!!! Woohoo! But I digress...point is, you could see UC/Pitt potentially developing into something.

Rutgers and Temple played every year from 1977 to 2004, and have met something like 36 times overall, if I recall correctly. They have technically been rivals, but it never caught fire with casual fans because both teams were up and down in the 1980s, struggled in the 1990s, and went in two different directions in the early 2000s. Of course the fans from certain internet sites definitely know how to kindle the flames of rivalry between the two schools.

UC and UL, however, is.
That's why I didn't bold it....and just laughed at the notion of Cinci/Memphis was ever a football rivalry.
Once Cinci left CUSA for the Big East...there's a very good reason why they never scheduled Memphis in football....because it was never a football rivalry to begin with.
I'm pretty amused by a UCF fan trying to speak for the Memphis and Cincinnati fan bases.
