FOX close to acquiring a stake in YES Network

YES is the Yankees network in NYC. Also does Nets games. FOX does purchase a package of ACC games in football and basketball for regional airing.

Last year during the NBA lockout, YES picked up several non-conference ACC basketball games from the regional cable package.

If this goes through, FOX may look to place a portion of this package on the network, particularly games involving Syracuse.

As you know Matt, the 3 pm ACC package has not been clearing in NYC and the Noon package has been clearing on the obscure independent WLNY. With Syracuse added to the league, the ACC needs to improve both of these clearances. YES would be a good candidate to pick up the 3 pm FOX package, although it may have to compete with the Yankees to clear some games in September. MSG, which picks up the SEC Noon package, or its sister MSG Plus, which has been carrying the FOX B12 3:30 pm package might be good candidates as well.

The fact that Murdoch's son sits on the board of Yankees Global Enterprises (the owning firm of the Yankees) and that entity/the team only owns 34% of the YES Network -- News Corp's shares would come from portions owned by Goldman Sachs or Providence Partners (the financiers). Just seems like a conflict of interests!
