Hope you are right.

Not that I agree or disagree, but I fail to see how this would reduce Houston's travel to any meaningful extent. Once you're on a plane, you're on a plane. An extra hour in the air means very little.

Goodness that's unbalanced. Did Louisville draw that up?

Yes the BIG EAST committee allowed Loserville to draw it up so they quit threatening to leave.05-stirthepot02-13-banana

I don't think it will play out this way but I thought the same thing. I'm not complaining, though. I like it. I can't imagine anyone having a tougher schedule than Cincinnati if BYU is #14 and UL is our crossover.

Looks like they stuck a Florida and Texas school in each division. Unfortunately we only have one Cali school, but at least BSU will likely be a permanent crossover.

This. The Big East is doing the right thing for 2013-2014, so I *really* hope that they're not going to change course in 2015. I'm telling you as a Big Ten guy that is witnessing non-geographic divisions firsthand - the zipper sounds nice in theory because you think that you can project which programs will be good and bad in the future to get better matchups, but it absolutely blows chunks in practice. All assumptions of which programs will be good or bad long-term when you're setting up the divisions invariably get thrown out the window within a couple of years, so what you thought would be great matchups in 2012 end up being complete dogs in 2015. That leaves you with divisions that are clusterf*cks with no basis in logic. Don't let the ADs' and coaches' short-term recruiting interests get in the way of setting up divisions that make sense for the long-term. The Pac-12 did it right while the Big Ten and ACC did it wrong.

I don't disagree but people also need to realize that the BE has something no other conference has. We have two Texas schools and two Florida schools. Expanding our recruiting reach into both states is an opportunity that a G5 school can't ignore. You essentially eliminate that advantage by putting the Texas schools on one side and the Florida schools on the other.

Is that alone a good enough reason to use the zipper format? I don't think so, but it is a valid reason. I'd probably argue the opposite. If I know UC is going to get into Florida every year instead of every other year, I am going to pound that into the ground. Texas be damned.

And it's just for two years.

When I spoke to the President of Temple a couple months back, this is exactly why he liked this idea for a few years. It's all about recruiting/marketing in new regions.

As a Temple fan, I don't mind this. But I don't know if this is going to help us increase attendance. We've come along way with attendance over the past 7 years, but I don't think the average fan really wants to watch Temple play most of these teams. I mean, I'm guilty of this. I didn't really watch the UL or Cinci games...I just stick to the teams like Villanova, Rutgers, Maryland, UConn, etc.

As a Temple fan I’m not happy about being aligned out west but it is what it is, the positives are what BE Homer said, new recruiting grounds. The down side is exactly what Shatter mentions above. This will do nothing to ramp up attendance or interest from the casual Philly college football fan. As a season ticket holder I’m fine with the teams coming to the Linc from the west, but with the exception of possibly Boise State it won’t bump attendance at all. As long as Rutgers stays on the schedule every year I’m ok with it for the short term.

McMurphy says that in 2015 the divisions will be:

RED

Navy
SDSU
USF

BLUE

14th Team
Cincinnati
Rutgers
Temple
Boise St
UCF
Houston

Each will have permanent crossover games(I put them in order so they would match-up, i.e. Memphis/14th team, Louisville/Cincinnati, etc.)

This makes absolutely no sense to me. If this is what the divisions will end up being why send Temple west for 2 seasons, simply make the divisions:

Red
Memphis
Louisville
UConn
SDSU
USF
SMU

Blue
Cincinnati
Rutgers
Temple
Boise St
UCF
Houston

Then simply add the 14th to the Blue, and Navy to the Red when they come in and be done with it. What am I missing?

Never mind the above, I saw the “McMurphy is an idiot” posts and his retraction, it makes sense now.

It's Fresno. Has to be Fresno. 2 California, 2 Texas, 2 Florida, it makes perfect sense.

I would welcome ECU. BYU, ECU, Fresno. All sound good to me.

your unofficial cheat sheet:

2013-2014

East
Rutgers
UConn
Louisville
Cincinnati
UCF
USF

West
Boise St
SDSU
Houston
SMU
Memphis
Temple

2015-

RED
Memphis
Louisville
UConn
Navy
SDSU
USF
SMU

BLUE
14th Team
Cincinnati
Rutgers
Temple
Boise St
UCF
Houston

So basically, who will be the crossover game for Memphis? All the rivalries look to add up well in that format.

Memphis will be everybody's Super Bowl. ECU will be our cross-over game. Memphis will just have to wait and play Cincinnati in the championship game every year.

Just switch UConn and Rutgers (lots of NYC friends) and I would be thrilled with our travel destinations for intra-division play and of course the Houston crossover. What is the transportation option/time for NYC to Rutgers?

My guess is the Big East has told Temple it will play UConn/Rutgers each of those two years...so really them getting shipped west will not be a big deal. For scheduling purposes and Marquee games. I expect Boise to play UC/U of L, both years as well. I guess we'll see.

I think you are absolutely correct. It is exactly what Aresco wanted and they will give that to him. And no way they set up stability and cohesion for 2013-2014 then completely turn the Big East upside down and around and destroy budding and long term rivalries with all new nongeographical divisional shakeups. And how can you negotiate a media contract with such longterm uncertainty as that?

In 2015 Navy and the new #14 to the west and Temple back where it belongs in the east. It's ludacris to think otherwise. We need to get a grip on the probable reality here.
