Louisville QB Brohm tears knee ligament, out for season

By WILL GRAVES, Associated Press Writer
November 28, 2005
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm will miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his right knee.

An MRI exam on Monday revealed Brohm tore the anterior cruciate ligament while scrambling for a 7-yard gain late in the third quarter of No. 16 Louisville's 41-17 win over Syracuse on Saturday.

Brohm clutched the knee for several minutes before moving to a training table on the sidelines to watch the fourth quarter.

"We're obviously disappointed in losing Brian for the year," Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said. "Brian was having a great season, and he was a big part of our success."

Brohm has thrown for 2,883 yards and 19 touchdowns.

No. 16 Louisville (8-2, 4-2 Big East) finishes its regular season Saturday at Connecticut. On Monday, the Cardinals accepted an invitation to the Gator Bowl.

Hunter Cantwell, a freshman, will make the first start of his career against the Huskies. Cantwell is 8-of-11 passing for 153 yards and a touchdown in mostly mop-up duty this season.

Yes this a terrible break. But imagine if they were to beat Miami with a backup qb. Whats the story with Bush? Will he be able to play in the Gator?

Yes and Hunter will surprise most of you when you see him play. He will step and get the job done.

Now we will see how far the UofL football program has really come. We'll have a backup walkon QB and maybe no Bush for the UConn game. It will be tough. I hope the UConn QB plays Saturday. I want their best shot. 04-rock

Can we still beat Miami? There's a good chance. Brohm could've led us to victory last year as back-up QB. Cantwell can do it this year, especially if Bush is back. A Gator Bowl win will ensure that we remain a top FB power and will go a long way toward getting the Big East back the respect it deserves.
Speaking of respect, I'm really looking forward to seeing how the basketball season shapes up for the conference.

Unfortunately injuries happen, but the team is staying positive, they have all the confidence in the world in Hunter Cantwell. Coach Petrino will work the offense around his skill set, I think we will be fine, yes losing brohm hurts big time, but we should have bush back. I hate injuries but it will give other guys a chance to step up, if we lose I won't blaim it on the sole purpose because we didnt' have Brohm. Now our defense will have to step up and make plays and our skill people on offense will need to step up. I'm actually excited to see what Cantwell can do leading the team, he's very accurate and I'm sure Petrino won't put him in a position to where he will make mistakes. You will certainly see us run the ball alot more now and probably more intermediate throws with a occasional deep ball. The only thing he doesn't have is experience, but talent he certainly has. We'll see what he is made of when we go to East, Hartford this weekend. We've been battling through injuries all year at pretty much every position, this team has endured alot and I have confidence in them. We may not win the Gator bowl but they won't lay down either, I wouldn't count us out either, our backs will be against the wall and Miami's Coach has already given us plenty of bulletin board material with his trash. I look for a hard fought game with whoever we play and I also look for a hard fought game up in Connecticut.

Syracuse fans are saddened it happened. It looked like a freak accident to me. Our LB seemed to tackle him high and twist him down. The LB who did it is a tough player but not dirty. I just knew when Brian clutched his knee it wasn't good.

However, I'm also sorry Louisville can't play their bowl game "full up". Hopefully, BB can make a speedy recovery and be back in September.

Its disheartening to me to see Brian hurt. But UL has more depth than that and we know it. As for the flame wars going on between RU and UL its very entertaining minus the happiness over injury things.

No sweat Texan Mark the LB made a good play and its just one of those unfortunate things that happens. Me as a fan, I'm saddened but we still have to play the games. I have confidence that someone will step up a fill the void, I know there is no replacing brohm's talent, but we just need someone who can step in a be consistent. I think we will be ok, our backup is no slouch in his own right and Petrino is very good and designing the offense around his quarterbacks abilities, he did the same thing last year with Stephan. Its over and done with now, I'm looking forward to seeing the team finish strong and hopefully win the bowl game. Hopefully Miami will overlook us now that brohm is out. They don't have any film on the backup, and there are rumors that bush could possibly take some snaps at QB. We'll see what we are made of, Hunter Cantwell can be a hero if he leads us to a Bowl victory. I still like our chances even with brohm out, but thats why we play the games. 03-wink

Connecticut should be good experience for the kid. Their defense should be fired up so he'll have to get used to the pressure. Would hate to see his first start be against Miami. That would take a quick learning curve.

I sure hope you do well against Miami. It is unfortunate that Louisville and the BE will be judged post Brohm. You certainly look like a top 10 team and would be without the miracle in Motown.

I imagine the game wasn't decided when he was hurt. You do see a lot of coaches leaving their starters in longer then they should. They are probably guided by infuencing poll voters as well as winning games.

That bites!! I was hoping UofL would go into the Gator Bowl guns firing.......this season couldn't have gone much worse for the BE.....

Sorry...not trying to predict doom and gloom for the Cards in their bowl game....but losing Brohm?!?!? OUCH!

Well, anyway.....go UofL!

PS: You know how our basketball games are usually down to the wire with one big shot after another and basically just incredible games? Well, I don't see that happeing this year. Take it easy on us will ya? :)

Sorry about Brohm, but I think you guys can still challenge Miami. You'll still have a strong running game to take the pressure off of Cantwell.

The important thing about Miami is that you control the running game, and limit the kick returns. Put it all on their QB. Cantwell is probably at least as good as what they've got.

Looks like that won't happen - Bonislawski is out so it's gonna be either of the freshmen - DJ Hernandez or Dennis Brown - as starting QB Saturday.

Nevertheless, I expect a good game. 04-cheers

UConn and Louisville will probably have the same defensive plan...put a lot of pressure on the young quarterbacks. I think the team with the best running game will win. Our quarterback will throw more than you think but it will be short routes two steps back and release. He will also do some shotgun stuff...but they'll run out of some of those shotgun formations.

Looks like it's DJ at QB for us vs. UofL. Not sure if this gives UConn a better chance than starting Brown - less of a passing presence, but the kid knows how to run & find the holes.

It looks like Michael Bush will be back and able to play likely against UConn. He practiced yesterday all out for the first time since the Pitt game. If he's able to go and close to 100% that would be huge for the Cards and the ability to keep the ball on the ground against the Huskies.

Two things could become of this
Good: UConn gets bowl
Bad: The South Beach Traitors beat the Cards
