The design of the lower bowl is very similar. The rest of the stadium is pretty different:

1) We'll be using pre-cast concrete for the upper seating instead of steel/aluminum.

2) Our suite/club level will be at grade instead of on top of the home grandstand.

3) Our main concourse level will have open unobstructed views of the field (like Rice Stadium or Minute Maid Park). In other words, the restrooms/concessions will be built into the outer walls of the stadium.

4) Our second level does not go around the entire stadium like UCF. On the other hand, our home upper grandstand is bigger than UCF.

5) The exterior look of the stadium will be completely different.

6) Ours will seat 40,000 with SRO to 42,000. UCF is about 5000 seats bigger.

Sounds like all positive improvements over UCF's bare bones stadium. Im glad UCF was able to lay the groundwork for these type of stadiums (FAU's is basically a carbon copy), but wish someone else had been the guinnea pig so we could have built one without the mistakes of being the first.

Too many endzone seats, bland exterior, no views from the concourse, etc. are all problems Houston has solved that UCF didn't factor in.

I've heard anything from $105-120M.

Had we built the exact same structure on a different site, it would have cost $150-165M. The reason? By building it on the exact same site as Robertson we take advantage of the existing infrastructure and save about $45M.

Stanford did the same thing in 2005-06 when they tore down and rebuilt on the same spot for $90M.

100 mill? Seems like a good deal. Hell when we added 7k seats it was 20 mill

RE: Leaked Rendering of future UH stadium
By the way, the SouthEast Light Rail line connecting the UH campus to the main Downtown-Med Center Light Rail line will be complete in 2014 when our new stadium opens.

The SE line runs right by the new football stadium. Big East fans visiting Houston can come stay in one of our world class downtown hotels (Four Seasons, Hilton Americas, etc.) and enjoy the downtown/midtown nightlife, and take a 3 mile train ride to the stadium on game day.

Once the Houston light rail system is finally complete (who knows when), you'll be able to take the train from the Galleria to the stadium. Or from Bush Airport to the stadium, etc.

7K for 20M =
35K for 100M

Ours will be 40K, so not much difference in cost per seat.

Construction and Materials in Houston is one of the lowest in the country. If you build the same stadium up on the East coast you could add 50+ million to the bill. We have very low construction costs in Houston.

Yeah, but you're getting 40k seats, a press box, and suites........ we just got seats and bathroom/concession areas added

Not sure how your stadium was originally designed, but remodels or add-ons always cost more than the if the same improvements are built at the time of the original construction. Retrofitting and working around existing structure is tougher and more costly as general rule.

God I wish we had that. The way the UCF concourse was designed is stupid with all seats being higher than the concourse. I don't know if it was cost savings or just poorly thought about, but there's not a whole lot positive that can be said about the architecture of BHNS.

Of course, it was ALL about costs. A mid-level concourse with restrooms and concessions would have added MILLIONS to the price tag. We just need to be a little patient and see what the admin does with the additional revenue coming in the BE.

Wow, that is totally awesome.

As mentioned in a previous post...cost benefits of being able to build the field below ground level saves on construction costs...something UCF couldn't do because of the high water tables/surround wetlands.

Many other schools have used similar designs like that (dig and put playing surface below ground level...with much of the 1st level seating area laying against ground foundation...from schools like Stanford to the new small stadium at UNC-Charlotte.
