Two stories
UNT in the process of routing ASU runs the grenade celebration. Two years later ASU repeats it at Denton in the first of 8 straight wins over UNT.

ULM calls a timeout to score a TD before time runs out. Two years later a reporter asks ASU coach Larry Lacewell why he called a timeout to score again. Lacewell responds "Go ask Pat" (Pat Collins the ULM coach.

In football these matters are best resolved by coaches and players not writers and fans.

RE: Two stories
ArkStFans story about Ark State vs UNT raises memories and questions.

The year before, ArkSt ran up the score on what was already a rout of UNT. The next season, the game ArkStFan referenced, they danced on our logo during pre-game and we did the grenade thing.

That is not all of it. The ArkSt basketball team danced on our logo in Denton and the resulting game was similar to rugby. Eventually UNT beat ArkSt in the conf tournament to go to the NCAA which for some was a very satisfying win.

What I haven't understood is why those feelings did not carry over to UNT fans. We have had a long relatiobnship w ArkSt. The teams in those years did not like each other. The coaches did not like each other. Some of the ArkSt fans (not all, just a few, but they were a problem) were inhospitable to us visiting UNT guys. It would not surprise me if the same were true of some UNT fans when ArkSt visited us. What has always puzzled me is these events did not create a strong feeling of rivaly among our fan base, maybe dislike. The fuel was there, but a fire did not ignite. I really thought it would. Most of our people really don't care, a game with Ark St is just another game.

And eventually the feelings among the coaches and players moderated. Jones and Brady were friendly. Opportunity lost.

George your timing is off. 2000 was the rout by ASU (only game we won that year Hollis left seniors in to set career records).

03 was the grenade I recall.

My timing has been off most of my life.

The part about ArkSt football team dancing on our logo at Fouts was the season after the Hollis rout. I could be wrong about the grenade year, probably am, by itself it is hardly memorable except it illustrates the continuing hard feelings at the team and coach level and that the antagonism was not just one Sat afternoon in 2000.

The basketball incidents I mentioned were also a couple of years after the Hollis year. The time period further illustrates my wonder as to why these things did not catch on with the UNT fans.

Will someone explain the grenade thing. I have something pictured involving throwing the ball up and players falling...is that what happened?

Yes. They were in a circle.

Wasn't there also a problem with WKU and North Texas, involving the "grenade" ?

I remember holding up signs written backwards for Jemario Thomas to read. Good times...good times.

Its a shame that the rivalry never really developed. UNT fans didnt know much about ASU, and never paid attention to the games. They just wanted to play Texas schools. ASU fans are way to focused on Memphis, to notice UNT.

Or it could be that stAte has beaten their asses so many times in a row in football that it can't be a rivalry (8). And stAte basketball has been in the apathy abyss since Nelson Catalina took us to the NIT 4 times in 5 years . . . I guess there IS baseball though.
