RE: Congrats to ULM - National Champions (again)
I have no problem with schools celebrating their club sports or cheerleaders, or band, or debate team, or forensics etc, but when people start talking about how it's just as relevant as NCAA sanctioned sports, I'm sorry, that's not something I agree(and clearly I'm far from being in the minority on this one) with and I'm going to voice my opinion in this open forum.
I'm sorry, but some of you are way too sensitive. And the argument that because we can't do it we shouldn't disrespect it is total BS, there are countless things in this world that require a great deal of skill, practice, athleticism, concentration, ability, talent etc. that I'm sure you don't care about. I'm not discounting the abilities of the water skiers, I'm not saying I could do even 5% of what they can, but the same can be said for world class chess masters, sword swallowers, magicians, poker players, chefs, cheerleaders, magic the gathering players, painters, authors, psychologists and just about any other thing you can possibly imagine that is a practiced acquired skill that one must devote their life to to reach championship levels.
Ever had an argument with an overzealous cheerleader or dancer who thinks that cheerleading or dance is a sport? Neither of them are sports, doesn't mean they aren't difficult, doesn't mean I could do what they do, doesn't mean they aren't athletes, doesn't mean there aren't sports that could possibly require less athleticism, but neither of them are sports.
We're all quick to criticize movies, television shows, books etc. Can we do what those writers, directors, actors, authors do? No we can't, but we're all willing to praise the ones we like and strongly criticize the ones we don't, how is this any different? The fact that I wasn't a college athlete and probably would be lucky to stay up on water skis for more than a few seconds does not disqualify me from making the point that FBS football and men's basketball are the only college sports that move the meter significantly in this country and there are only a handful of others that move the meter at all and club sports aren't even an afterthought, they are a complete non-factor. Not being mean, not trying to take away from anyone, not trying to tell those who do care that they shouldn't, just stating facts.
