UMass moved to 16-9 overall and 6-6 in Atlantic 10 play as it dropped its third-straight game. The Minutemen shot 44 percent and made nine 3-pointers. UMass was also 17-of-20 from the free throw line.

UMass Rebounds For 75-66 Win At Rhode Island
[Image: -3d34c89308f75c22.jpg]

The Minutemen will enter the tournament as either the No. 6 or 7 seed and play Thursday evening.

KINGSTON, R.I. -- Chaz Williams had 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Freddie Riley knocked down six 3-pointers as Massachusetts rebounded from Thursday's loss with a 75-66 win at Rhode Island Saturday afternoon.

UMass improves to 19-10 overall and finishes the Atlantic 10 regular-season at 9-7 for the second-consecutive year. The Minutemen will enter next week's Buick A-10 Championship as either the No. 6 or 7 seed, based on the outcome of the Xavier-Butler game later Saturday night.

RE: UMass Basketball
First Half Run Leads Stony Brook Past UMass 71-58
[Image: 12455186-large.jpg]
In NIT First Round Freddie Riley goes over the 1,000 point mark for his career.

A 17-point run to close the first half gave Stony Brook a halftime lead and the Seawolves never looked back as they defeated the UMass men's basket all team 71-58 in the NIT First Round on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.

The Minutemen finish the 2012-13 season with a 21-12 overall record, while Stony Brook improves to 25-7 and will face the winner of Iowa/Indiana State in the NIT Second Round.

UMass was led by Freddie Riley who scored 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting as he finished his career as a Minuteman with 1,006 points. Fellow senior Terrell Vinson also hit double figures with 11 points and five rebounds.

The Seawolves received 20 points from both Anthony Jackson and Dave Coley. Jameel Warney had 16 points to round out the top scorers.

Stony Brook closed the first half on a 17-to-0 run holding the Minutemen scoreless for the final seven minutes, five seconds. The Seawolves hit nearly 52 percent of their shots, while holding UMass to just 30 percent from the floor. Outside shooting was also problematic for the Minutemen going just 1-for-12 from beyond the arc

RE: UMass Basketball
2013-14 College Basketball Conference Snapshot:
MWC, MVC, A-10 and more.
The key mid-majors to watch for 2013-14

1. WICHITA STATE (30-9, 12-6 Missouri Valley, NCAA Final Four)
Key players gone: Malcolm Armstead, Carl Hall, Demetric Williams
Top returners: Ron Baker, Tekele Cotton, Cleanthony Early, Fred Van Vleet, Jake White
New faces: D.J. Bowles (freshman), Kadeem Coleby (Louisiana-Lafayette transfer), Earl Watson (junior college), Evan Wessel (redshirt)
The point guard Armstead and leading rebounder Hall are gone from the Final Four run, but the rising sophomore Baker played only 18 games last season. With Early, Baker and Cotton, there’s enough returning to win the Missouri Valley this season, especially if Van Vleet flourishes as a full-time point guard. The 6-foot-9 Louisiana-Lafayette transfer Coleby and local 6-5 guard Wessel will fill some gaps.

2. VCU (27-9, 12-4 Atlantic 10, NCAA round of 32)
Key players gone: Troy Daniels, Darius Theus
Top returners: Rob Brandenburg, Treveon Graham, Juvonte Reddic, Melvin Thomas, Briante Weber
New faces: Jordan Burgess (redshirt), Terrance Shannon (Florida State transfer)
Five of the top seven players return to VCU, including three who averaged double-figure scoring. Theus’ 2.4 steals per game will be missed on the defensive end, but there’s a lot to like about a VCU team that went 12-4 in its first season in the Atlantic 10. Shannon was an injury-riddled player at Florida State, but he’s a 6-8 senior who will be a key piece for the Rams if he can stay healthy.

3. GONZAGA (32-3, 16-0 West Coast, NCAA round of 32)
Key players gone: Elias Harris, Guy Landry Edi, Kelly Olynyk
Top returning players: Gary Bell Jr, Sam Dower, Przemek Karnowski, Kevin Pangos, David Stockton
New faces: Gerald Coleman (Providence transfer), Angel Nunez (Louisville transfer)
The front line takes a hit without Olynyk and Harris, but Mark Few’s backcourt should be solid with Pangos (41.7 percent on three pointers) and Bell. Two centers who were part-time players last season in Karnowski (7-1) and Dower (6-9) will look to take a step forward in replacing the Olynyk. Gonzaga’s season was marred by losing to Wichita State in the round of 32, but the Bulldogs should remain a top-25 contender in 2013-14.

4. NEW MEXICO (29-6, 13-3 Mountain West, NCAA round of 64)
Key players gone: Tony Snell, Demetrius Walker
Top returning players: Cameron Bairstow, Alex Kirk, Hugh Greenwood, Kendall Williams
New faces: Merv Lindsey (transfer from Kansas), Cullen Neal (freshman)
Longtime Steve Alford assistant Craig Neal was promoted to coach a team that returns four players who started at least 30 games. The Lobos may be the preseason pick to win the Mountain West, but that NCAA Tournament loss to Harvard will be tough to forget. Snell (12.5 ppg) is a notable departure, but the Lobos were a balanced team for most of the season.

5. SAINT LOUIS (28-7, 13-3 Atlantic 10, NCAA round of 32)
Key players gone: Kwamain Mitchell, Cody Ellis
Top returners: Dwayne Evans, Grandy Glaze, Jordair Jett, Rob Loe, Mike McCall
Jim Crews has the job full-time and a chance to repeat in the Atlantic 10. Replacing Kwamain Mitchell’s 30 minutes per game will be tough. Four starters are back, not including the assist leader Jett.

6. UMASS (21-12, 9-7 Atlantic 10, NIT first round)
Key players gone: Freddie Riley, Terrell Vinson
Top returning players: Cady Lalanne, Raphiael Putney, Chaz Williams
New faces: Derrick Gordon (transfer from Western Kentucky)
Derek Kellogg’s program has steadily improved in five seasons. Now, the Minutemen have a chance to be the top team in the Atlantic 10, which will see Butler, Temple and Xavier depart. The 5-9 point guard Chaz Williams will be one of the top players in the league, and the 6-3 Gordon was a major pickup from Western Kentucky, where he averaged 11.8 ppg, 6.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists.

7. HARVARD (20-10, 11-3 Ivy, NCAA round of 32)
Key players gone: Christian Webster
Top returning players: Siyani Chambers, Steve Moundou-Missi, Laurent Rivard, Wesley Saunders
New faces: Zena Edosomwan (freshman)
Harvard’s upset of New Mexico signaled the young Crimson would be ready to take the next step in 2013-14. Last year’s team had only one senior (Webster), and one junior seeing significant minutes (Rivard). Led by Saunders and Chambers, Harvard will have a leg up on the the rest of the Ivy League the next two seasons.

8. BOISE STATE (21-11, 9-7 Mountain West, NCAA First Four)
Key players gone: Kenny Buckner
Top returning players: Anthony Drmic, Jeff Elorriaga, Igor Hadziomerovic, Derrick Marks, Mikey Thompson, Ryan Watkins
The Mountain West is expanding, but teams like Colorado State, UNLV and San Diego State are in transition. With two of the league’s top returning scorers, Boise State is geared up for another run to the NCAA Tournament. Leading the four-guard lineup, Drmic averaged 17.7 points, and Marks averaged 16.3.

9. SAN DIEGO STATE (23-11, 9-7 Mountain West, NCAA round of 32)
Key players gone: Jamaal Franklin, James Rahon, Chase Tapley
Top returning players: J.J. O’Brien, Xavier Thames, Winston Shepard)
New faces: Josh Davis (transfer from Tulane)
The Aztecs have absorbed the loss of Kawhi Leonard and other key pieces in recent years. The next step is to replace Franklin, their top player the last two years, and the clutch Tapley. The key is the sophomore Shepard, a five-star recruit who averaged 5.7 points last season. Davis is a major pickup after averaging 17.6 points and 10.7 rebounds for Tulane in 2012-13.

10. UNLV (25-10, 10-6 Mountain West, NCAA round of 64)
Key players gone: Anthony Bennett, Anthony Marshall, Mike Moser, Katin Reinhardt
Top returning players: Khem Birch, Bryce Dejean-Jones
New faces: Jelan Kendrick (junior college), Christian Wood (freshman)
UNLV was the most talented team in a deep Mountain West, but the Runnin’ Rebels finished third in the league before losing to Cal in the NCAA Tournament. The Rebels will have eight players who were top-100 recruits at some point, and that’s taking into account the departures of Reinhardt and Moser via transfer. With something of a revolving door on the roster, the results have been mixed under Dave Rice.

RE: UMass Basketball
Jesse Morgan’s basketball career at UMass appears over
[Image: jpeg]

AMHERST — Junior guard Jesse Morgan’s career on the University of Massachusetts basketball team appears to be over.

According to multiple sources close to the program, Morgan has been forced to withdraw from the university for disciplinary reasons and has returned to Philadelphia. He is attempting to appeal the decision. The sources said the action stems from the same undisclosed incident that caused Morgan to be suspended for the team’s Nov. 3 exhibition game

RE: UMass Basketball
La Salle, UMass, VCU to Play in ESPN Marathon
[Image: KJSQHOMCNRSDMQE.20130813141130.jpg]

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Three Atlantic 10 Conference men's basketball teams will compete in ESPN's annual Tip-Off Marathon on Nov. 12. La Salle and Massachusetts will host in back-to-back games, beginning at 9:00 am ET, while VCU will head to Charlottesville for a 7:00 pm ET contest against the Cavaliers.

The Tip-Off Marathon features 24 straight hours of men’s basketball on ESPN2. La Salle will host Quinnipiac in Tom Gola Arena at 9:00 am, marking the sixth game of the Marathon, which begins Nov. 11 at 11:00 pm. UMass will follow the Explorers at 11:00 am, hosting LSU at the Mullins Center and the Rams will face Virginia in the 7:00 pm game.

La Salle is coming off a historic season in which the Explorers made the NCAA field for the first time since 1992 and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since a Final Four appearance in 1955. La Salle advanced to the Sweet 16 from the First Four -- current A-10 member VCU is the only other team to advance from the First Four to the Sweet 16.

The Explorers’ win over Ole Miss advanced the Explorers to the Sweet 16 and marked the sixth consecutive year the A-10 has had a team advance to the Sweet 16.

UMass, led by First Team All-Conference guard Chaz Williams, made its second straight trip to the NIT last year. Massachusetts advanced to the NIT Semifinals in 2012. It was the first back-to-back postseason appearances by the Minutemen since 1997 and 1998.

Shaka Smart leads the Rams into Virginia's John Paul Jones Arena for the first time. The highly anticipated match-up will be the first meeting between UVA and VCU since 1998 and kicks off a two-year home-and-home series between the schools.

Ranking the Games in ESPN’s Tip-off Marathon from Most to Least Intriguing (Jeff Eisenberg, The Dagger – August 12, 2013)

3. VCU at Virginia, 7 p.m. EST

In Jan. 2012, Shaka Smart made waves when he insisted VCU and fellow CAA powers George Mason and Old Dominion had been better programs of late than their more well-known in-state ACC brethren, and "it's not even close." Now the Rams will have the chance to prove it head-to-head when they face Virginia for the first time since 1998. Bragging rights won't be easy to obtain, however, for either side. VCU returns the core of last year's NCAA tournament team, while Joe Harris-led Virginia appears capable of a top five finish in the ACC. The contrast in tempos also promises to be intriguing.

7. LSU at UMass, 11 a.m. EST

This has the feel of a game that will matter more in March than it might seem in November. It would be a disappointment if LSU can't play its way into NCAA tournament contention this March considering forward Johnny O'Bryant delayed his NBA dreams to return to school for another year and point guard Anthony Hickey is back as well. Aspirations are similarly lofty this season at UMass, which will boast one of the nation's most exciting backcourt tandems in Chaz Williams and Western Kentucky transfer Derrick Gordon.

14. Quinnipiac at La Salle, 9 a.m. EST

Everyone besides senior leader Ramon Galloway is back for La Salle from a team that went from the First Four to the Sweet 16 last month. Still, it's hard to get too excited about a game that begins at breakfast time and includes Quinnipiac.

Ranking the 24-Hour College Hoops Marathon (CBS Sports – August 13, 2013)

4. VCU at Virginia (7 p.m., Nov. 12, ESPN2)

Nice contrast of styles in this one, as Havoc will go against the defensive-minded, slow-it-down mantra of Tony Bennett and Virginia. With that said, this should be a good intrastate battle where we get to see if both teams are set at the point guard spot.

6. LSU at Massachusetts (11 a.m., Nov. 12, ESPN2)

Another game between two teams looking to break into the periphery of the NCAA tournament discussion. Massachusetts loves to get up and down, while LSU brings back four starters and welcomes Jarrell Martin into the fold.

15. Quinnipiac at La Salle (9 a.m., Nov. 12, ESPN2)

The Explorers are coming off a surprising NCAA tournament run to the Sweet 16, and TV darling Tyrone Garland is back on the perimeter. Ramon Galloway will be a tough loss, but Dr. John Giannini's troops will be fine. Quinnipiac finished on a hot streak last year.

Following a home exhibition against American International on Nov. 5, the season gets underway Nov. 10 with longtime Commonwealth rival Boston College in the TD Garden as part of the inaugural Coaches vs. Cancer Boston Tip-Off.

Two days later, UMass will participate in the ESPN College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon for the third time and second-consecutive when it hosts LSU at 11 a.m. on Nov. 12. The Minutemen will face Youngstown State on Nov. 17 at the Mullins Center.

UMass will open play at the Charleston Classic with Nebraska on Nov. 21. Defending Mountain West champion New Mexico or UAB await in the second day, with Clemson, Davidson, Georgia and Temple in the other half of the bracket.

December begins with a pair of games away from Amherst - at Eastern Michigan on Dec. 3 and against BYU in the Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase in Springfield on Dec. 7.

Following final exams, UMass plays host to Northern Illinois on Dec. 14 before a roadcontest at Ohio on Dec. 18. Another neutral-site contest awaits on Dec. 21 against Florida State at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla. as part of the Orange Bowl Basketball Classic, with Florida and Fresno State as the other pairing.

The Minutemen will bookend the new year with consecutive Saturday home games against Providence (Dec. 28) and Miami (Ohio) (Jan. 4). The visit by the Friars will be televised nationally on ESPNU with a 6 p.m. tip. The final non-conference matchup is Jan. 18 at Elon, which completes a three-year series.
