It bares mentioning that the year we went 10-3, you went 9-4(8-0), and only had one conference game decided by less than a touchdown so you guys were no slouch that year and we had a quarterback who many MT fans still believe was on the take and I'm not saying he was, but I've heard enough messed up stuff about the guy that I cannot entirely dismiss the notion.
Since the series ramped up in 2006, there have been three years that our teams have really appeared, at least on paper, to be similar in class. In 2007, 2008 and 2010, you were
clearly the better team. Not just on the day the game was played, but when you look at the results from the rest of the season. In 2006, 2009, and 2011 we appeared to be pretty similar teams, in 2006 and 2011 the games were decided by a combined four points. In 2009, we had a quarterback that shredded the rest of the conference and our teams beat the rest of the conference by a similar margin. Of the three games our teams appeared to be of a similar class, the only one that wasn't close, was the only one he played in.
Even if you want to entirely dismiss any funny business going on outside the game, 2009 is still the anomaly of the series, yes you've blown us out more often than not, but again, three out of the four years that you blew us out there was no question who the better team was when you compare the seasons of each team.
There's still a lot of football to play between now and our game this year, but at least right now, it looks like it should be another year in which our records are reasonably similar and maybe I have the blue glasses on, but
if one of us is going to be more than a game better than the other by the time the game gets here, I expect it to be us and you guys took it on the chin a couple of times in conference games last year, including against WKU who had previously never beaten you guys. So while us blowing you out wouldn't certainly be a surprise, it's not like the precedent for unexpected blow outs doesn't exist at all.
It's all fun to talk about now, and again, there is tons of football left for both of us to play and it's fun to dream about putting a whoopin on you guys, but in total honesty I expect the margin of victory(for whoever wins) to be much closer to 2006 and 2011 than to the four years in between.
