If you really wanted to go global with that analogy, Mr. Deford...
The United States is in the WESTERN hemisphere.* (Thanks, Caltex, I said Eastern...don't know why)
The United States is considered 'western' civilization because of how colonial expansion played out.
The United States doesn't have a 'western' time zone, just 'eastern' 'mountain' and 'pacific'.
Therefore, Big East applies very aptly.

And SDSU has always been a Big East school culturally because:
1) it's an up-and-coming, urban university
2) that was never part of the "old boys club".
They have a lot in common with other members of the conference. So ridiculing them joining the Big East is simply not funny.
Which really just goes to show that the Big East is not just geographically but culturally not the Big East anymore either. Instead, it's new identity is a hybrid of the old Metro Conference (urban universities) and CUSA (that were not part of the club)
so maybe that would be its real name: Metro USA

The United States is in the Eastern Hemisphere? My mother needs to demand a refund for her tax dollars which went into teaching me that the US is in the Western Hemisphere. They don't just call it the Far East because it was originally as far east as people knew in the world.

Are you saying that what I said isn't valid? Perspectives, man. You have to be politically correct, sir.
Technically, nothing should be considered East or West because of multiple points of reference...
...and I screwed up my post, to be quite honest. Thanks for pointing it out.

Also, Missouri is more Midwestern than southeastern. As a matter of fact, it's not southeastern at all. And Notre Dame in the Atlantic Coast Conference?
Please..... I was born in Missouri and I can tell you that Mizzou is a total cultural fit with the SEC East. It is exactly like Tennessee and Kentucky. I live in Mississippi now and I can tell you I don't see much difference. Does the Mississippi river separate the Southeast from the midwest? Is Texas Tech in the midwest? Was Colorado in the Midwest? This geography crap is getting really old. I have some Missouri towns to bring you to. Even the folks from Athens Ga couldn't tell the difference. Is Texas A&M in the southeast? It's farther west than Mizzou, but still has an SEC Feel. It's all about culture, not a map ...

No on Colorado but they are, believe it or not, on the Great Plains like everyone else in that conference except West Virginia (the mountains associated with the state are just to the west). Texas A&M is not perhaps southeastern because of where it is geographically speaking in the country (South-Central) but Texas east of I-35 is very much southern, if not southeastern. A&M always wanted to go to the SEC because it was such a great cultural fit.
And I'll agree with you that Missouri, especially in the south by the Ozarks, is southeastern in culture to an extent but overall, Missouri is more Midwestern.
