Intriguing mysa.com article on UIW and its reasoning of moving up
UIW looking to score more than points with football - http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/colle...868973.php

Also, note the text in the box on the left-hand side which describes a couple of key differences among the three different NCAA divisions:

LEVELS OF COMPETITION
Differences between the various divisions of NCAA athletics:
DIVISION I
- Scholarships: Full and partial offered (with the exception of Ivy League programs, which do not offer athletic scholarships).
- Sports: Member institutions must sponsor at least seven sports for men and seven for women (or six for men and eight for women), with two team sports for each gender.
- Competition: Schools must play all the minimum number of games required in each sport, other than football and basketball, against Division I opponents. Men's and women's basketball have to play all but two games against Division I foes.
- Attendance: Football Bowl Subdivision teams must average 15,000 in actual or paid attendance for home games. Football Championship Subdivision teams have no minimum attendance standards.
- Finances: Schools must meet minimum financial aid awards for their program, and there are maximum financial aid awards for each sport that programs cannot exceed.
DIVISION II
- Scholarships: Full and partial.
- Sports: Members must sponsor at least five sports for men and five for women (or four for men and six for women), with two team sports for each gender.
- Competition: Football and basketball teams must play at least half their games against Division II or FBS or FCS opponents. For all other sports, there are no scheduling requirements.
- Attendance: No minimum attendance standards.
- Finances: There are maximum financial aid awards for each sport that programs cannot exceed. Student-athletes pay for school, typically, through scholarship money, grants, student loans and employment earnings.
DIVISION III
- Scholarships: None offered.
- Sports: Members must sponsor at least five for men and five for women, with two team sports for each gender.
- Competition: Primarily against other Division III schools, but there are no restrictions on scheduling. Primary emphasis is on regional in-season and conference competition.
- Attendance: No minimum standards.
- Finances: Student-athletes receive no financial aid related to athletic ability. Athletic departments are staffed and funded like any other department on campus.
