Interesting comment, Blazer.

That could possibly be skewed if you added (subtracted) the money that many schools lose by going to many of the bowls that are at the level we're currently tied in with. Not sure how many of us would fall into that category (hopefully none), but mid to lower level bowls aren't always money makers for the participants.

BCS level bowls are not always money makers for schools either. The requirement for schools to buy big blocks of expensive tickets puts the onus on them to sell out. UConn took a financial bath by going to the Fiesta recently. I'm sure their are other examples as well. That will change with the big conferences taking ownership of bowls like the "Championship Bowl" of the Big 12/SEC, etc. But all the bowls have been a financial burden on many schools that have a problem selling all their alloted tickets.

True or untrue, what's that got to do with anything expansion related?

I got it from a horse at the stable (someone at recent CUSA meetings):

CUSA will NOT be expanding any time in the near future.

Furthermore, EVERY school in the SunBelt has inquired about membership in CUSA.

It was nice of them to wait until football season to release this so we'd have something to talk about during off-season.

That's really a shame. The additions of schools like TXST, Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, Troy and potentially South Alabama could actually benefit the conference with a blend of markets and solid athletic teams, pending Western can its' act together in basketball again.
And no, it's not pimping schools, just thoughts that could actually work to benefit the conference.

That can't be true, every Troy/ULL/Arky State fan on the Slum Belt board swears they'd turn C-USA down if offered. 01-wingedeagle

I'm glad we are staying at 14 for now. Let things settle and see how FAU, Georgia State and Texas State progress before extending an invite. Keep an eye on Delaware and JMU as well.

I guess he gets the idea that Houston moved to some "superior football conference" that is totally better than CUSA....LOL. We all know the Big East is a basketball conference first and always will be as long as the basketball only schools are part of the equation.

Quote:The other schools joining C-USA in 2013 are Old Dominion, Florida International, Texas-San Antonio and Charlotte.

Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky was one of the architects of the Mountain West/C-USA alliance that could have been as big as 28 programs. He admitted Wednesday that outside schools are still reaching out to the league in pursuit of membership.

"Our options were really to rest completely or to continue to work on improvement through membership strategies," Banowsky said. "Our board felt like we should continue to work."

Banowsky expects to have an "ongoing conversation" with the league's officials this year as they consider expansion.

At the start of the 2015 season, C-USA is set to have 14 all-sports members.

On Wednesday, Banowsky said he wasn't sure on how that league would be divided geographically.

"We haven't gotten into the discussion of divisions," he said. "Some of that will depend on maybe our future expansion strategies."

That statement by Banowsky indicates a league that's not close to settling for 14 teams, and the league's coaches said Wednesday they support the commissioner's efforts to strengthen the league.

Who are your picks? I personally think the front runners will be FAU, Texas State, Delaware, Toledo, UMASS, Georgia State, James Madison, New Mexico State.

Out of those schools, if I had to pick two (one for each side) I'd go FAU in the East and Texas State in the West. If they go beyond two schools I think you go after Delaware or Georgia State and then go after New Mexico or New Mexico State. Thoughts?

I think the Sunbelt will make a good developmental league for us. Ga State and FAU would help a little in travel mitigation for FIU.

Certainly...but you'll hear better things from ECU fans about ODU than you will Charlotte because ODU is rapidly doing what I listed. Locally, they are already saying its a football school....and its only been three years. I fully understand you have to have something to root for, but I'm very familiar with Charlotte and I know its history is of being a commuter campus. Its time to throw out the ACC allegiances ON YOUR CAMPUS. ECU struggles with this as well (as kids come in brainwashed). Your students have to buy in and get your alums excited.

Just curious if the bolded is in humor or serious. ODU, who is a fine addition, is perceived as a better conference partner because they are "saying" they are a football school?

I know its hard for Memphis fans to grasp, but FOOTBALL IS KING. It drives the bus. Congrats on your BE berth and basketball success, but most ECU fans are glad Memphis is gone. Its a basketball school and FB is king. When the ACC commish says that 85% of its TV contract is from FB, that should tell you something.

What ECU fans want is for ODU to keep recruits home instead of going to VT and UVA and a lesser extent Richmond....and Charlotte to keep recruits home instead of going to the ACC and a lesser extent App State. If that happens, the programs will be good, it will generate interest and the more interest in FB, the more value it has for TV contracts. That makes ECU money.

Wow, just ... wow.

Have a good evening PITL.

The only positive I can glean from Memphis being gone is that it might be easier to win the conference and move our program up, but for the conference overall it's not a positive in the near term. But, now ECU can maybe aspire to win the conference whereas with Memphis around that is an unrealistic expectation.

Basketball, but football drives our TV contracts and is responsible for the overwhelming number of TV appearances for the conference.

There are other positives. It helps everyone’s strength of schedule for football, but at the same time takes away a guaranteed win. Guess there are pluses and minuses to everything.

Oh come on there have to be a few more schools in large cities who have at least contemplated starting football we can add all sports. I'm sure if we look hard enough we can find them.

By 2015 you may be in the same spot. Assuming all expectations are met with us going to FBS and we don't compete right away its a guaranteed win in football and you're right where you left off with a loss in basketball. Basically balanced out again. 05-stirthepot

The good news is Tiger football is on the rebound and will return to winning ways. Our TV revenue for ONE year is about to be such that it will equal what 5 to 8 years of our current CUSA revenue would be. ECU TV revenue picture is not so rosy. You are right. Pluses and minuses abound.
