Who has the best shot (good team, good OOC schedule) to make that happen?

stAte? Cajuns?

I'm not gonna count FIU or UNT because they are on thier way out. IF they do it it does NOTHING but hurt us IMHO>

Do you agree? I mean lets say that UNT or FIU breaks into the Top 25 this year. It will then look like CUSA pulled the best out of the SBC to improve thier product.

We need a non-transitional team to break the ice.

If it did occur in football or even basketball, it would be done as a member of the SUN BELT and that would give recognition to the conference. What a school does as a conference member reflects on the conference. Not wanting either to do it, IMHO is just sour apples.03-nutkick

RE: Sun Belt shuffling leaves conference with 12 schools
I think FAU will certainly be better with Pelini at the helm. Gotta be better than Schnellenberger.

A lot of people seem to be writing off Troy to have a good season. We get a ton of people back, our QB, and almost all of our secondary. Plus we have a true wildcat-QB this year, unlike last year when we didn't have Jernigan and we had our RB's running out of the wildcat. Everyone knew our RB's couldn't throw worth a crap, so it was always predictable...

“It’s a conference going like this (Hawkins points upward). I’m not sure all conferences are going like this. I think we’ve passed two, and may be on the verge of passing a third, without mentioning names.”

God I love Hawkins!!!!03-cloud9

For that year yes.

Then all that "reputation" gets transferred onto your new confrence.

So lets say you beat LSU this year, HUGE news. All over ESPN. And your right it would be UNT a SBC member beating LSU who will most likely be ranked in the top 5.

In 2013 people WILL remember that UNT beat LSU and they will now see you in CUSA logos and if you kept rolling it would enhance that confrence perception instead of the SBC.

Not hating on you guys at all for leaving, your schools is doing what it feels is best for itself. Cant fault that. However having a transitional team take a big win or Top 25 ranking into CUSA next year would suck for us in the SBC.

I don't think it will even matter in regards to people remembering next year. If you polled the average college football fan, I guarantee you the majority could not tell you what conference North Texas is in, not this year and not next year. I once heard a couple of guys who fancied themselves big football fans talking about how "some of those division II teams play good football" while watching a MAC game.

The reason a top 25 victory for UNT or FIU would not be as good for the Sun Belt as a victory by one of the other 8 schools is because ESPN.com wouldn't make it out of the first paragraph without mentioning that they were leaving for C-USA.

The most important next step is the TV contract. If we can get a TV deal that matches C-USA or MWC. Until we do that we will always risk losing teams to them. Also perception will change if ESPN throws extra cash our way.
I feel ESPN likes what it sees in TXST allowing us to host two TV games next season. I understand the teams we are playing play a large part in that decision however we are still hosting two games. They could have picked any number of Texas Tech or Nevada games at their home field.

Sure, based upon what Benson stated in his initial hire press-conference I would say that would be a reasonable conclusion. He clearly contradicts himself in this article from that press conference. He initially stated that he would help WAC programs make the transition, including to the Sun Belt. He also stated that he was going to push for twelve football programs that would allow for two divisions and a championship game. Based on those comments, one could assume NMST was a viable candidate.

Clearly the Presidents Committee has set some boundaries or criteria, and he is publicly changing course. Nothing wrong with staying in the current footprint, but there is not anything wrong with looking at all options when the time comes.

Kinda proves that the presidents are calling the shots and not the commish.

To me, it sounds like Dr Hawkins from Troy coordinates with the other SBC university presidents to get a concensus and then Dr Hawkins calls the shots with the other SBC Presidents backing him up and the Commish and his staff strategizing, developing plans, making suggestions, and implementing whatever Dr. Hawkins and the SBC Presidents direct.

Sounds good to me!! 02-13-banana

Actually the conference of the home team has a lot of control over who gets a game so games it is easier for ESPN to get Tech games thru TxSt and the WAC than through the Big 12. I forget when Nevada leaves for the MWC and it might be easier for ESPN to get them at TxSt also.

Remember that everything in Texas is big. The grapes in Texas are so big, they look like apples.
