2012 Texas State MLB Draft Board
Jeff McVaney - Round 8 to Detroit Tigers

Louis Head - Round 18 to Cleveland Indians

Colton Turner - Round 21 to Toronto Bluejays

Travis Ballew - Round 23 to Houston Astros

Casey Kalenkosky - Round 30 to Atlanta Braves

This is the fourth consecutive year that Texas State has had a player picked within the top 10 rounds of the draft (2009: Paul Goldschmidt, Round 8 & Ben Theriot, Round 9; 2010: Jason Martinson, Round 5; 2011: Kyle Kubitza, Round 3 & Carson Smith, Round 8).

Pretty impressive.

I remember watching Goldshmidt play his AA ball in Mobile (Arizona's Affiliate). That guy can hit it a long ways.

Watch for McVaney. He ended up in the top 3-5 of a lot of our stats (surpassing Goldschmidt in some) and he didn't play his freshman year (except a few relief appearances). They didn't really use his bat until 15 games into his soph year because he was a bullpen pitcher (and a FB on the football team) that they "didn't know he could hit"

They only started using him (first as a DH) when they saw him hitting them out during a pitchers pick up game.

How do you scout/recruit someone and not know they can hit? The kid was all-state in the outfiled so he had to be swinging a good bat.
Anyways, water under the bridge.

Interesteing that the Tigers had him listed as LF when he spent all of this year and a lot of 2011 in RF. I doubt they use him topitch unless it's an extreme circumstance (ie: ton of extra innings and the bullpen is used up) but that pitching arm serves him well in the outfield. The SLC learned not to try for that extra base on him.
