RE: myths about WVU as a football powerhouse and

I like David Teel.

--------------------------------

Some additional myths seem to out there according to some posters:

1) West Virginia:

After last years improbable blowout win over Clemson, WVU is considered by some to be a football powerhouse.

WVU has consistantly played good football:

However, last year:
SU beat WVU on Oct 21 49-23;
WVU lost to UL on 11/5
WVU won their last 3 games against Cin, Pitt, USF by a grand total of 7 points: almost the definition of parity. (Pitt lost the WVU game by one point)

WVU was not a dominant team last year.

SU beat WVU the prior year as well by 19-14.

2) Clemson:

In another thread, a poster claimed Clemson ("a football school") is at a significant disadvantage playing for a national championship because "weak" ACC teams (like Duke) lower their strength of schedule.

Last year, Clemson had 3 late season losses, losing to GT, NCSU 37-13 and USC 34-13. Clemson was ranked 7 prior to their loss against NCSU.

Not sure I understand how the ACC does not give Clemson an opportunity to achieve the football goals of their fans. All they have to do is actually win.

As best as I can determine, Clemson has won the ACC once in approximately 20 years.

RE: Myths about ACC football
"Neither school has reaped extraordinary dividends, but the Wolfpack (2002) and Tar Heels (1997) have cracked the Associated Press’ final top 15 more recently than Clemson (1990)."

RE: Myths about ACC football
I found this interesting, because I didn't know about it:
Quote:One final note on the Duke-UNC axis: Time was when ACC basketball earned far more than football from television rights fees, and the conference’s best programs received the most money.

Corrigan rightfully thought the ACC needed equitable revenue sharing, but you-know-who had to agree first. Sure enough, Duke athletic director Tom Butters and his North Carolina counterpart, Swofford, signed off on the deal.

So in the early days of FSU in the ACC, Duke basketball was subsidizing FSU football... Wow.
