RE: UTA Addition
I like the UTA move. It keeps the SBC in the Dallas market and they have good basketball and baseball teams. Potential for a football team down the road. Gives Texas State someone nearby. It doesn't hurt the Sun Belt. I think the SBC adds GS/AppSt eventually to go to 12/14, with NM State left in reserve in case the conference gets raided again. FAU, Ga State, and MTSU could all be potential targets. Idaho, James Madison, Liberty, and Jack State all wait in line after that. Delaware is also possible.

So there'ssome upside.

But get some fans please.

I still prefer NMSU and App/GaSou to UTA but its not a guaranteed bad move. It could work out really well.

Couldn't agree more. I can understand why some on here would have a problem with the UTA addition, but I don't think it will be all that bad. When they announced they were going to the WAC, I read that they would like to revive their football program at some point (the year 2016, IIRC). But I haven't heard anything more about it since then. Some of this may be the SBC taking a page from CUSA's book with the large marke thing, in case they ever do revive their football program.

Their new basketball arena is very sharp.

But you're absolutely right about getting some fans. I live in the DFW area, and I can tell you the media coverage, etc. for UTA is basically zilch. Not knocking them, just that's the reality of it. I can think of one billboard in the area advertising UTA, and that's about it. My wife and two very close buddies graduated from there. Took no time at all to convert my wife and one of the buddies to become Texas State fans. The other buddy, while a huge sports fan, just doesn't care about UTA's sports programs because of them being in the Southland conference for so long. He, like so many others, just didn't care about those schools. So I see fan apathy as a problem.

Another thing UTA has working against it is all the other sports teams in the area: Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Stars, TCU, SMU, UNT. And of course, UT and A&M get their fair share of coverage in the area as well

the dfw area fans are fickle..they have many sports activities vying for their interest..but they will come out for uta if they schedule home games with some name opponents. football would be a nice addition. as a uta grad and former maverick club member, I and many others dropped our support back when the school dropped football. some said they would never come back, but I think many would if they decided to start up again. but having football is no guarantee to success. not many attend smu games and even with the success they have had at tcu..they dont fill the small stadium they have..when they have a home game against ut or ok. or textech most of the people in the stands will be there to see the other team...

RE: UTA Addition
One of the things that UTSA has that made them attractive was the backing of the city. Even though there are many pro teams located in Arlington, they get no credit. Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys are the teams of Texas with no affiliation to Arlington and that upsets the city. I think that a college program with the name of the city in it would get backing and the alum and students want it. The adms are the issue.

edit: imo

Their highest attendance last year was a game against North Texas with 1,300 ppl, and even that would have been the lowest attendance for most schools this last season. Seriously, I didn't look up their average basketball attendance, but most games had between 600-800 people in the crowd, and I use the term crowd loosely. I don't want a big market team with no fans. Just say no!

Tough to get a big market non-BCS team that has a big fan following. Might be a few, but not many.

uta is on an upward trend..they have spent 300-400 million on projects around campus in the last few years..just graduated 4400+ ..have maybe 150 degree programs...have an ambitious president and the city of arlington (about 400,000) is starting to partner up with the university on several large downtown projects near the campus. there are several gas wells on campus to add some revenue and the students are getting more involved. the new AD came from ut-austin and I think he will get things done...

There just aren't any teams available with a good following. Except for maybe Missouri State (and of course App State, GaSo) and if Wichita State would put together a football team. I believe the Missouri Valley would be tough to pull teams away from at this point though.
