Something really big for MT
not athletic, but probably the most expensive investment in bricks and mortar that any university in the state of Tennessee has made in a single structure.

MT breaks ground on long-awaited new $147M Science Building

Quote:...Middle Tennessee State University broke ground Thursday on its long-awaited $147 million Science Building, a project that will help the institution produce more college graduates ready for emerging high-tech jobs.

The turn of the shovels also was the official construction launch for the building, which is aiming for a spring 2015 opening date.

Gov. Bill Haslam said the building will help address the state’s need for more college graduates, especially in STEM areas—science, technology, engineering and math.

“Graduates with STEM degrees are vital to our state’s ability to thrive and compete in the 21st century economy,” Haslam said during the ceremony. “With more space to train in these areas, this building will help us toward our goal of increasing STEM graduates.”

The governor included almost $127 million for construction of the Science Building in his 2012-13 state budget, which passed both chambers of the General Assembly late Monday. About $20 million has been spent to prepare for the facility.

"It is fitting that we celebrate the end of the University's yearlong Centennial observance with this investment toward its second century of service," Haslam added.....

Coolness. South is finishing up its similar project. 155,000 sq ft Shelby Hall will house Engineering and CIS. I don't know why, but I couldn't get an updated aerial shot to publish. Anyway, from the drawing, the two side go away from the central part at a V.

We've been trying to get that thing since I was a student in 03.

My girlfriend was in the old science building when it caught fire back in 05. Funny now, but could have been a disaster.

But who cares about student safety at MT when UTk needs a new parking lot.

These are the things that really matter and really change your university. Here is the slideshow for the 350k sq foot Petit Science Center.

Congrats to MT. You're going to be looked at differently once your school is mentioned in science research papers. It's a great feeling.

Good God, and I thought the new allied health building was nice.

RE: Something really big for MT
The new science building will occupy the space where my dorm room stood until it was demolished last year. I only lived in the dorm for one semester so it's not like I have a ton of memories there, but it is kind of strange that it's gone and a science building will be in it's place. Totally awesome news for the school though.

You could teach science in the basketball arena... there'd certainly be more energy in the building that way.
