Those of you that do not know, App State is basically waiting out the upcoming last (3d) year of their basketball coaches contract. We lost a coach unexpectantly and they made a quick hire with little experience.
So before this couple of years App went 23 or 24 wins and to a post season tournament, beat Harvard and Marshall and then lost to Long Beach State. So after this season we will have a new coach.

It's a helluva long trip from Jonesboro to Boca. But we make it. It's going to be a helluva long trip from San Marcos or Arlington to Boca. But we'll make it.

And, it's only 50 miles farther from San Marcos to Las Cruces as it is from Troy to Boca (Troy is the closest school.)

Again, the only difference is you're adding a third time zone with NMSU.

Because instead of one murderous trip, you're going to have 2.

Why have 2 when you can get away with only having 1? Especially if that extra one brings nothing to the table like NMSU.

I'm all for adding Southern Cal if they want, but until they want in, I say we stay in the south/southeast and try and make the geographic footprint as small as possible.

Having a compact conference means more bus trips, which means cheaper travel, and that savings can be re-invested in our programs.

Doug I'm in total agreement. I don't think NMSU is the answer either. But I'm just pointing out we've been going to Miami and Boca for awhile now and people aren't acting like those cities are just east of the moon. You'd think NMSU was located on Jupiter reading some of these comments.

If New Mexico State is Jupiter, what does that make Idaho?

As for Georgia Southern basketball, we've spent the past three seasons on probation after our former coach Jeff Price (USA assistant now) got caught up in a cheating scandal. 2008-2010 were some of the worst years in GSU basketball history. Earlier on in the decade however we averaged 20 wins a season and made the NIT in 2006. Our new coach Charlton Young, however has righted the ship, and we finished at .500 last season (16-16). He's a young, energetic guy who's one of the best recruiters in the country. While at Georgia Tech he signed guys like Derrick Favors and Iman Shumphert and Marquis Daniels while he was at Auburn. He's also a walking sound bite. Calls us "THE Georgia Southern University" every chance he gets. When packed, Hanner Fieldhouse is the best home court advantage in the SoCon. Fits only 4,000 but its very compact and has great acoustics. Just added new lockerrooms thanks to our alum Michael Curry (Detroit Pistons, VP of Basketball Operations for the NBA). Also a $5 million renovation to Hanner is scheduled, in addition to plans for Bulloch County to build a 10,000 seat civic center. Fairly certain we could hold our own in the Sun Belt.

Just because we already have one outlier does not mean we should add a 2nd. And the 2nd just so happens to be terrible in football. I'd rather have the "perception of being a FCS startup league" for a few years and then go kick some ass, than bring in a no talent football program just so we can say "See! We added a FBS school!"
