Last man standing
Just hit me today about the horrid luck of some schools.

New Mexico State's first conference had Arizona, Arizona State, New Mexico, Texas Tech, and UTEP. That league folded with the creation of the WAC.

Their second conference was the Missouri Valley and they were there with Louisville, Cincinnati and UNT. NMSU left for the Big West when the league got knocked out of business as I-A league (today's FBS).

Their third league was the Big West which disbanded football so they came to the Sun Belt.

Left there for the WAC which is now dead as a football league and likely only remains a conference if someone like Great West or Summit or Big Sky merges with them takes the nameplate.

Idaho from 1922 to 1958 was in the Pacific Coast Conference with USC, UCLA, Cal, Stanford, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State along with Montana (who left in 1950). After a player payment scandal was uncovered Cal, Washington, UCLA, UCS, and Stanford pulled out to start a new league killing the PCC. Idaho was never invited to join with the new group and ended up in the Big Sky four years later.

They moved up with Boise State to help keep the Big West afloat and then when it sank as a football league moved to the Sun Belt then the WAC which is now in its current state.

Of the two only Idaho's affiliation with the Big Sky ever provided a stable home.

They might be up for the most conference changes ever. Never heard of such bad luck.

TCU is joining their sixth. SWC, WAC, CUSA, MWC, Big East (just long enough to have to pay an exit fee) and now Big 12. The difference is after the first forced change, TCU worked to make the rest on their own.

I feel sorry for NMSU far more than Idaho. Idaho consistently did the minimum needed to be 1a/FBS. Kibble come, please. Hell, build an AIRPORT big enough for charter flights to take off with a full load of fuel!!!

TCU only had one league shot out from under them and every move the Frogs made post-SWC was a step toward getting back in the "bigs".

I was just pointing out NMSU didn't hold the conference record.

But the Frogs made a conscience decision to not just get back to the bigs, but back with Texas, Baylor, et al. They did nearly nothing from the 50s til the SWC broke up. It was a wake up call that they, unlike some others, answered. Schools can do a lot if they really want to. It is the schools that make a conference, not the other way around. Motivated schools can do a lot.

What has Idaho done to improve since the PAC formed? I know they can't fix the airport, but they could have fixed their stadium and other facilities.
