There is no "West Palm Beach-Boca Raton" Market. The West Palm market is technically classified as "West Palm Beach-Ft. Pierce"...two cities which are to the north of Boca Raton by about 40-50 miles. West Palm is actually just about as far from Boca as Miami is. Boca is in between Miami and West Palm, right on the border of Broward and Palm Beach Counties. We are actaully closer to Ft. Lauderdale (15 miles) then FIU (30 miles). Boca gets listed under the WPB market because it's in Palm Beach County, but sort of a misnomer because Boca is really a blend of the two media markets. For example, FAU is covered by the South Florida Sun Sentinel (based in Broward county) and the Palm Beach Post (based in West Palm). At my home in Boca, I get the NBC station from West Palm, but I also get CBS4, which is the same CBS station I get at my office in Miami. Boca can't really be boxed into either market, it's more of a combination of the two.

FAU does not mean the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale TV Market. Not true. In terms of TV coverage, which is what DMA's seem to be all about, Miami Dade and Broward (Ft. Lauderdale) Counties share the SAME television market and stations. Not so with Palm Beach County, which is where Boca is.

Here is an official listing, where Miami-Ft. Lauderdale is #16, with WPB coming in at #38.

FYI, you can't get pick up all the Miami TV Stations in FTL using terrestrial television. I know - I don't pay for cable at my second home. You can get all the WPB stations.

So drop Dade from the FAU market. And drop Palm Beach AND Broward from the FIU market

RE: SBC vs CUSA DMAs
Well, as far as I know the local ABC (Channel 10), WSVN (Fox Channel 7), CBS, and NBC use the Miami affiliates in West Broward and Hollywood as well. None of them use the WPB affiliates in their cable systems. I don't know in Ft. Lauderdale per se, but that's not the case in South/West Broward Cable TV stations.

Further proof is the DMA listed here. It lumps Miami and Ft. Lauderdale together...and not Palm Beach. I'm not making this up. It's the DMA's as officially listed whether some agree/like it or not.

Well someone needs to tell Mr. DMA that you can't get the Miami ABC or NBC affiliates in Downtown/NE Fort Lauderdale using terristrial television. Perhaps in Hallendale or in Davie. And how long does it take to get to FIU from Downtown Ft Laud? How long does it take to get to Boca? Using normal traffic patterns?

I'm not the ones that make the DMA's rules. It's Miami-Ft. Lauderdale in all the Miami TV stations and the corresponding DMA's...again...whether you like it or not. Again, Cable TV companies pick up Miami TV stations. Heck, NBC6 is now located in Pembroke Pines (Broward) and serves Broward and Miami....not Palm Beach.

RE: SBC vs CUSA DMAs
Ding! Conference USA and the Sun Belt are primarily on cable. FIU is tertiary in Miami. FAU is tertiary in West Palm Beach. Both have the same pull in Broward. That's why this market stuff kinda misses the point. How much interest can you quantify? FIU or FAU could grow market share or interest in their markets and with their alumni base but neither has a huge crowd to sell. What we're doing is selling potential in many cases.

Georgia State is 100 percent potential as is Charlotte and ODU. In fact, the SMALLER market state schools tend to be the only ones with a history of demonstrated support (Southern Miss, Troy, ECU, Arkansas State, etc.). Southern Miss (last in CUSA by market size probably draws better overall than UNT every time.

Potential for Rice is about zero no matter where they're located. Tulane has some legacy but its a private school too (at least it has students and alumni). Tulsa does better than some others with their small enrollment and alumni base. We have no private schools in the Belt. Its up to us to fill our stadiums better than CUSA and that is something we can control. In support, we can pass CUSA. Which would be reflected in higher ratings.
