RE: State of the WAC: A Conference on Life Support 2.0
One more thing that is a plus about this, bowl invites. We should be able to get a third if not forth automatic invite out of this. Could even see one of the CUSA auto invites come out way.

RE: State of the WAC: A Conference on Life Support 2.0
Has there been anything anywhere to make someone think App State is coming to the SBC ?
I sure hope that Benson does not add freakin' NMSU for football only. If so, could we bring back Wright Waters ?

TV spots are a finite resource. As the number of conferences dwindle the likelihood of the Belt adding more games go up.
True.
But the tv market has fragmented so much and with the advent of cable, satellite, internet, and 4-G phones the whole thing will likely be different as the technologies mature. The day may come when the conferences completely freeze out the tv middle-men.
Which is why the two expansion teams (GSU and Texas State) were the wrong choices.
They were picked only because some suit somewhere thinks he can squeeze more $$$'s out of ESPN3 or Fox-SouthWestNorthEast. Not going to happen (at least anytime in the next decade).
We need to pick strong programs. Strong programs lead to strong fan bases, strong fan bases lead to stonger interest, which leads to more TV sets, which then gets the $$$'s.
This is exactly why I think Benson is going to call up Georgia Southern and App State for the next two expansions.
Adding Georgia Southern and App State would give the SBC two football programs that could compete very quickly and be very competitive within just a few years. Adding Texas State just gives the SBC a presence in Texas . . Texas State will not be competitive in the SBC for many years, if ever.
All the non-AQ conferences except the MWC have taken in or will soon take in one or more FCS programs so there is no stigma in accepting FCS move ups for the CUSA, MAC, and SBC . . we are all past that point so just go after the best programs available . . Georgia Southern and App State !!
I don't really care if Tx St is successful, if they are added. I actually hope South beats them more times than not, but to say they will never be any good is selling them a little short IMO. I don't think Fran forgot how to coach, and last time I checked he was a pretty good one. He he started the whole tcu train, and was good @ Bama. He did hit a road block @ a&m.

That seems like a nice compromise and pulls the 'Belt together regionally.
Why is everyone calling Texas St a FCS startup? They've had football since 1904. While they haven't won FCS NC's like App St and Ga So, they are very similar to other Sun Belt schools. They are in a "college town" but not far from a larger metro area. I think Texas St is a good add. They are upgrading their stadium, and I think will have more local support than UNT. They've been an average FCS school and have won their conference twice in the past 7 years.
UTSA, Georgia St, USA, and Charlotte are the start ups.

Thats my bad. I thought both of the Texas twins were startups. Just goes to show how much I dont really remember from FAU's short time in FCS.

I think we are all assuming that they are not stupid.
The upper level conferences are going to reach a limit at some point and the final conference realignment wave will end and things will freeze up. No more slots available in any conference.
There are only so many seats on the train and one of the best FCS football schools would be sort of dumb to sit in the station and watch it roll off into the distance.

Like it's been said before, I think when the new championship scenario is out and goes into effect the Big East will break apart. There will be no reason for schools to travel across country for the hopes of a BCS bid when the BCS no longer exist. When this happens there will be another shake up in the conferences. With that said, the conferences that add schools on merit instead of the size of the city they are in will be in a better position to make runs at NC's. That will bring in the money, not being a loser in the third largest market in the eastern half of the US.

I think the key question for the new Big East is will the new TV deal be enough for Boise.
Turns out that foolishly chasing AQ riches is going to leave a lot of schools with just fool’s gold.

We have only heard rumors at this point. Our athletic admin is known to be very, very tight lipped about most major decisions. They will not issue comments or will talk around questions. Very frustrating for the App faithful, but we are pretty used to it. At some point something will leak but that is usually only right before they were going to announce it anyhow, other programs are always amazed by how secret they can be.

As a Denver fan, our "new" WAC situation is distintigrating rapidly.
I think we might be screwed if the remaining WAC schools can't form a Basketball/Olympic sports conference.
Hello Summit league. Argh.
