USA board approves construction of new dormitory
http://blog.al.com/live/2012/04/usa_boar...uctio.html

"MOBILE, Alabama -- Anticipating higher enrollments in the next two years, an executive committee of the University of South Alabama board of trustees on Wednesday approved construction of a new dormitory."

South Alabama is starting to hit its stride and the Football team has a lot to do with it. Check out the campus map.

Something TROY doesn't do.

Must be nice. TROY's chancellor and big wigs want our campus to have 10,000 students, but won't build dorms. Their solution, kick upper classmen off campus.

Seriously? We just finished a new dorm, too. Cool stuff! Hopefully we'll hear news of a new stadium in the next fear years too!

How about ... behind the Football Field House, upper right hand corner of the map? They have plenty of room for a stadium. Two blocks from Airport Blvd. By the way, they finished widening Old Shell Rd from University to Ziegler Blvd.

Also, the county and city just approved a new apartment complex on Old Shell Rd across from the fairground. It is about a 1.5 miles from campus.

This might be the same plan, but I'm pretty sure they are planning on bulldozing either the Gamma, Beta, Delta, or Epsilon dorms to build updated dorms with more capacity. I think it's the Epsilon dorms that are at risk but I can't say that for sure. Then you have the new Stokes Hall, the Grove and the new Campus Quarters complex going up and you have a lot of new student living available (even though the Grove and the Campus Quarters are not owned by USA).

It's is amazing when you think of all the construction that has taken place at USA in the last 10 years. My best friend was in town this past week, who graduated in 2009 or 2010 and was astonished at the growth of South in that time. The rapid change taking place at South is incredible.

It is more than amazing. I slept in Alpha dorm many a night. Do you remember location of the Alpha Dorm, which was the only dorm on campus? I was there when they opened Beta, Gamma and Delta dorms. Now they are talking about bulldozing them. South has come along way.

RE: USA board approves construction of new dormitory
Actually, to clarify Troy does have plans for a new dorm that would be located where the gravel parking lot is in front of the frat houses. It's just not possible to shut of the entire campus at once for the sake of building just this school year.

1.New two floor cafeteria
2.New round about in front of the cafeteria
3.The road had to be repaved
4.The Trojan Arena
5.The amphitheater was deconstructed.
6.Bibb Graves was renovated
7.We got a Confucius institute and one of the few in the entire country
8.A new quad was built and they still haven't finished the water fountain yet.
9.The tree's behind Alumni hall were brought down to make space for the new amphitheater

Keep in mind this was all within this school year people and nothing major can happen until the Trojan Arena is finished and that parking lot is open. I believe the next priorities are to convert Sartian Hall from a basketball arena to a workout facilty then the dorm is next. And don't be quick to forget it was only last year that Troy finished about ten Fraternity Houses that are pretty much just small dorms.

That is great news. I thinkwhat you see here is that Troy and South Alabama are switching mindsets and starting to compete for students with UA and AU. I think that is why UA announced that it was increasing enrollment to 32,000 by creating partnerships with the junior colleges.

I repeat, with increased enrollment comes more graduates which equates to more alumni.

RE: USA board approves construction of new dormitory
UL began a big campus housing project in January of 2011. The plan was to raise on campus housing from just 1000 to about 3000. Attached is a video of the proposed work. The first phase is completed, with the first new dorm open for business for fall 2011 classes, and the second one open for spring 2012 classes. They are working on the second phase dorms right now, with them expected for use for fall 2012 classes.

Here are a couple of photos of the two new dorms.

They also plan to start work on tearing down most of the student union complex and rebuilding it with new amenities.

When they do pull the trigger on the OC stadium, if they go with the track location instead of Hillsdale, I think we have seen the last of the Gamma Ghetto.
It's worth more as parking.

Those things were crappy when I lived in them in 1995. I was stoked when I got into Delta 6.

I think it depends on the overall size of the stadium plans. A 40,000 seat stadium might be a little to cramped. Also, take in traffic concerns. Placing the stadium in Hillsdale close to Schillinger Road which is the major North/South roadway in west Mobile. Schilllinger Road connects with I 10 and I 65.

I really liked USA's campus when I visited there several years ago. As far as FIU's dorm construction, we are starting Phase I of a 1,240 bed dorm complex. Phase I will have 620 new beds and will be finished for Fall 2013.

Here, below, is a link of the architecture company in charge:

I didn't cover other work as I thought this was just about dorms. The Cajun softball team recently finished a new grandstand construction project, and now seat about 3500. I'd put it in the top 20 parks in the country. They are in the final planning for a major construction project for baseball (new grandstand/clubhouse/boxes) due to start as soon as this baseball season ends, as well as a new track field house (offices, dressing rooms etc) which is shared with soccer as they use the same field. They've received 1.5M donation for a new huge weight room that will be used for all sports which is due to start construction soon. In addition, fundraising has started for a major football stadium upgrade, which will involve a large seating increase as well as new press, luxury suits, and plenty of area for team/coaches/student learning areas. I think this is in the immagineering stage trying to determine exactly what they want out of the complex.

This current campus growth of all of the SBC schools is promising and encouraging. I've been able to keep up with USA's growth even living out of town as I visit my son 3 or 4 times a year and he lives about a mile from the campus. It would be nice to see new campus buildings on each campus sent from fans of all the schools. I'm really impressed with what I've seen so far.

That's true. Growth in all our campuses, from what I've seen, is pretty impressive. 04-rock
