Football Playoffs, no mention of a Sun Belt Auto-Bid
Haven't seen much talk on here about the latest commissioner meetings. I am glad we are making progress on the playoffs, even if it is only 4 teams to start, but over time we can grow on it I guess.

College football playoff closer to a reality

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Mike Slive appears close to presiding over another epic victory.

The commissioner of the Southeastern Conference has seen his member schools win an unprecedented six straight Bowl Championship Series titles. Now Slive's determined push for a college football playoff appears more likely to succeed than ever.

That was the vibe from multiple participants in the more than 10 hours of talks Wednesday at the annual BCS meetings here. Nothing will be official until later this summer, after each commissioner takes the proposals adopted here back to their conference membership and then more national meetings ensue. But this is the crucial first phase, and it has gone well for the pro-playoff faction.

At the very least, come the 2014 season we will definitely not have the same problematic postseason college football currently is saddled with.

"The status quo is off the table," BCS executive director Bill Hancock said.

It will eventually happen, in the FCS / I-AA it started as a 4 team playoff and eventually went to 16 teams and conference champ auto bids.

Give it about 15 years and we will all be happy!

No mention of and "auto-bid"? Why would there, when there would be none.

If they were talking about auto bids to only BCS leagues, or only bids to conferences not named the belt...it would be an issue. I have no problem with a 4 team playoff, as long as a Non AQ team has a chance.

I would hope if they do ever expand beyond 8 (if/when they get to 8) that they don't allow every conference to participate. If it's 16, take all conference champs that finish in the top 25 (of the BCS or whatever ranking system that's devised) and then take the best at-larges to complete the bracket. I don't want to see some 87th ranked WAC school in the football playoffs.

Why?

Don't we often see a low ranked team in the Mens Basketball tourney because they won thier confrence tourney? I think EVERY confrence champion deserves a shot. Put the lowest ranked ones in the 16, 15, 14 bracket, but they still deserve a shot.

It's American as apple pie. The long shot, the under dog, the David beating Goliath story. It's the only thing that college football is missing, with the exception of a moral compass.

Yeah! Remember the Alamo?! wait that was the Republic of Texas before they begged to be in the Union. Anyway, that is why we should invite UTSA. Remember the Alamo!

If we are going to say all 1-A Conferences are BCS leagues, then we should allow all BCS Conference champs to participate. If the former non-AQ leagues are so inferior, we'll get smoked in the first round and it won't matter. But on the off chance we have a team that's worth a dang maybe we'll make some noise, and I think being that we are all BCS we should be given that opportunity.

The only thing that has prevented an SBC team from making a BCS bowl is they have not had a team good enough. If they had one they would have gotten in.

I looks like that will still be the case going forward and IMO it is a big plus for the former Non-AQs that no Conferense gets a free pass.

I do think there will be more pressure on schools to win in the future.

I think any SBC team with a perfect record deserves a shot at the big one.

I can't agree with that statement. How many years did it take Boise to finally get recognized?

It was one game that made people stand up and listen. When they beat OU head to head in 2007 in such a dramatic fashion it made lots of people take notice. Most people wrote it off as a fluke but they continued to win and that was what made the difference.

One statement game and then a few confirmation games that your program is there.

I really thought Troy was about to go down the same path as Boise a few years ago but the past season saw their run slow down.

Don't know, don't care!

Do know that as the BCS evolved over the last 14 years, it was modified to insure greater access, and schools from Non-AQ conferences were included. Not their problem no SBC team could cut the mustard.

Going forward it does not look like they are going to reverse course on efforts to provide access for all FBS programs.
