Lacrosse Primer
Since this was brought up in another thread, I though a primer might help a few of our non-lacrosse bretheren.

Lacrosse is an old Iroquois Indian game played to teach warfare to the young. The game is now played on a field the size of a football field and is similar to hockey in that the goal is within the field of play, or rather, play can go on 360 degrees around the goal.

It is fast paced, full speed sprints, cuts and switches between offense and defense quickly. The ball move as fast as any pitcher can throw. Also, it is as violent as football in that you can body check, stick check and simply beat the crap put of your opponent - well, almost.

The best thing about lacrosse is that you do not need to be freakishly huge to play. Average size people dominate the sport because you have to be an all-around athlete to be good. Big guys cannot run fast enough or cut; tall guys cannot make the sharpest of turns and quick changes in direction. This is great because we love our football players to be fast and strong and we love our hoops guys to be long and lanky.

Anyway, check out this upcoming movie:

Also, check out Syracuse, Virgina, Duke, Princeton, Johns-Hopkins, Cornell, Hobart, Maryland, UNC (OK, you do NOT have to check them out), Harvard, Yale, Army and Navy. You will see outstanding teams. Look at their rosters and their sizes, and then look into their academics. Most lacrosse players are very good students, bringing back the "Student" in student-athlete.

Providence? They're 1-13.

You probably meant Princeton.

04-cheers ABSOLUTELY! Providence hasn't done anything. Princeton, on the other hand is a perennial powerhouse and can never be overlooked.

(Thanks, I fixed it)

You left out ND. They have pretty good men and women lacrosse teams.

I was focusing on traditional powers. ND has done a great job in lacrosse. They have helped in opening up the midwestern area to lacrosse. When I was stationed in BIG territory, they all scoffed at lacrosse. Now, they take it seriously.

I watched part of the Denver-Duke game last night. It was impressive to see 12,000 people show up for a lacrosse game at Mile High... Duke lost though, and I don't follow lacrosse that much, but it was interesting.

You'll care more when Pitt gets a team.

Maybe Yes, maybe No... Pitt has a baseball team that I clearly ignore...

I feel the same way about baseball, any baseball. Even if SU had a team, I wouldnt care. But lacrosse is different. Its a very brutal sport that requires a lot of conditioning and athleticism. I got into Syracuse lacrosse for those reasons, plus the biggest reason is that SU is a big winner in that sport.

It will come to you, Terry. Congrats to your Irish, they earned it the old fashioned way. Plus they bring lacrosse to the Midwest, spreading the game.

04-cheers

I've seen some brawls totally out of control before. Definitely a good battle there.
