I don't know about the sub-par sports, as we've won our share of OVC titles, but I applaud your honesty and reasoning. That's all I was looking for...thank you! I do, however, believe that some of you are happy to have Ga State in now for the market, yes, but also you know that they pose no threat in football, basketball, or baseball...although the basketball team was good this year.

RE: Another look at Jax State
we want programs who add value to the league. Why would we want teams who sucked and were simply cupcakes to walk all over? Troy, and the other programs in the league, are only as good as the brand we play under. We need teams who can win on the field. if the Sun Belt adds nothing but losers to the roster than we are seen as losers, period. Ga State is new, but in the long run we see them as a program who can succeed. THAT is why we invited them.

Damn dude...you say this as if Troy is some sort of super power. You wanted Ga State so you could have another whipping boy in the league. I like the "loser" comment, and I do love the fact that three letters, "JSU", gets under your skin.

Actually, the real problem is one of media coverage. Yes, there are 200,000 people in Anniston/Gadsden. But.... No television stations are there. At best, in whatever media market JAX claims its' in, you will be no better than the fourth most covered team in that market. And that wouldn't change even if you made the jump to FBS. Perhaps if the TV station on JAX State's campus moved away from Jesus programming and combined a local newscast with commercial programming, then at least there'd be one station that covered you guys that people watched. Again, not your fault, but I don't see you guys getting any media exposure outside of two newspapers. Unless UAB drops football, that isn't going to change.

Troy is tertiary in Montgomery (behind Alabama and Auburn). They could actually be primary in Dothan and SE Alabama as there isn't anyone else there. And unlike Gadsden/Anniston, Dothan has its' own media.

USA is the one and only institution playing D-1 sports on the Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida Gulf Coasts. The university is relevant and heavily covered throughout in the Mobile-Pensacola TV market. And since much of our student population comes from Mississippi, we can try to grow into the Biloxi-Gulfport market as well.

Fair points. The only thing I will say on the media thing is that after watching an 11Alive news cast a couple weeks ago, on a Sunday night, Sam Crenshaw actually had a piece on this very subject (because of the GSU offer), and he stated that there were 3 possibilities for other SunBelt newcomers; ASU, JSU, and Ga Southern.... While I was amazed that Jax State was even listed, I was also amazed that he and the guest (Russell Wright of Collegiate Consultants) both agreed that JSU fits nicely between the Birmingham and Atlanta sports markets. I was NOT amazed that Mr. Wright stated that JSU has to update certain facilities.... I am not naive enough, nor is anyone else at JSU, to think that just because we made some great improvements to our stadium that we should get an offer to an FBS conference. We know we had to have a clear vision, and we have been putting that vision into motion now for the last couple years.

I personally would like JSU to stay in the FCS for a while, and so would some of my JSU brothers. You all are are welcome to visit our board...

Wait, you mean someone in the media actually mentioned Georgia Southern as a viable candidate for the Sunbelt???? What would Saint and Panama do if that happened??????

Sounded like it was merely speculation on Crenshaw's part to me, anyway, the inclusion of Jax State should tell you the whole thing was meaningless.

No, your wrong. It wasn't speculation. Those words came directly from Russell Wright, who did the Ga State study, plus he's actually stated so in my communication with him.

Oh, so now we're just another "whipping boy". So I gather JSU would be something other than that. Okay. SMH.

To the contrary. I'm saying that's what they think GSU will be in the Sun Belt. I think GSU will have a fine program in the next few years and will take recruits away from JSU, Troy, Tech, Ga Southern. I like what you guys are doing there. No issues with me on GSU... Trust me...they believe we would be a whipping boy as well.

That's truly rich.

Jax has next to no chance of getting into the Sun Belt, your only other FBS option that is even slightly realistic is if the WAC does indeed go through with some sort of crazy east division to try and stay afloat. If that's what you're holding out hope for, then good luck with that, if you're holding out hope for C-USA or some other FBS league...03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao

Even still, that only sounds like conjecture, as in "Jax State is within the existing footprint and plays decent football at the FCS level, so they could definitely be a candidate."

Just because you could be a candidate doesn't mean you'll ever get an invite. Just too much working against you.

That all depends on how they schedule. I would like to see them schedule easy the first few seasons.

RE: Another look at Jax State
Only way Jax State gets into the SBC is if the SBC gets raided BIG time and loses 4-5 schools and has to make quick adds.....

To be completely Honest Troy got in when the SBC needed a team bad. Troy got an offer at the right time. I honestly dont believe if Troy was still in 1AA today without our upgrades we would have nothing to offer other than a good football program to the SBC....This is why Jax State wont make it in.

Please explain that.....just wondering if you could enlighten us on what GaState is doing right.
So far all I can see right is that they are in a big market they don't own, but the SBC hopes that one day they will have a piece of (of course then they will go Alliance or BE once that happens). That hopefully within the next decade if they can get a coach that can recruit GA well they will be 6-5.

I can see lack of support from the ATL area based on attendence alone, and bad losses across the board D2s, FCS transitionals, NAIAs (for Gods sake! ewwwww03-puke) 04-jawdrop

Just wondering what JSU superfans take is on all that?

Well that should speak volumes about your program. After all, we were selected, you, well, not so much! Stay in Boone and get some business about yourself. Infatuated much?

Hell, I'm from North Carolina and knew absolutely nothing about your program. You're not even an after thought in NC. At least we've been dubbed one of the big three in the state of GA. I guess the truth hurt. Get off that entitlement attitude. Karl Benson said for himself, potential trumps a program's history. Guess it's a tough pill to swallow. So if you got a problem, go to http://www.sunbeltsports.org and lookup the movers and shakers to voice your opinion instead of talking negatively about Georgia State every time our name is mentioned.

As a matter of fact, it wasn't too long ago that most App State fans were too good to be associated with the Sun Belt. It was a foregone conclusion that CUSA was your final destination. I guess reality is starting to set in.

I'm not sure when, but at some point GSU ensured their athletic budget was over 20m. They've put a program out there in a metro area and started to throw money at it before they even got an invite; before anyone knew this realignment non-sense was going to turn into what it is. They've shown they have resources and commitment. The fan base may not have yet, but the administration has. I hope that answers your (I think, valid) question. Yes their market is a major part of why they got in but that's how it goes. If GSU had 10k students and a budget of 12m I don't think they would have gotten any serious looks, even with Atlanta.

Thank you for an actual response unlike some others. I would like to hear JSU superfan's take as well since that is who I'm asking. I understand the whole market potential thing, most would think they would want them to actually produce something but maybe that is in the past.

Thank you for offsetting my negative rating, sir. Dude gave me a negative rating simply because I feel the way I do about Southern. How silly is that? Anyway, it doesn't change how I feel about USA either, lol.
