lol...slappy shoulda dropped 'one of the best' in his description. it really has been an easy school to do well at and move on.

i won't name call but what on god's green earth makes you think you can pay a hoops coach more than we can?

because you paid a dee co-ordinator a little bit more to bring him back to more familiar turf?

western isn't unt's feeder program because of one hire.

we're not balling on a budget like ulm. i have no idea the specifics but western has generally been top 1-3 on sun belt budget.

thanks for complimenting ray but when he leaves western for more money it'll be for way more than unt is ready to pay.

i hope yall don't lose jj but i'm sure if you do you'll do fine in replacing him. you guys do care about hoops.

We could too. That's his starting salary. But Harper's mother lives in this area. This is his home and home is very important to Coach Harper. He grew up loving Western Kentucky basketball. He dreamed of playing here. He would not be interested in UNT. Somebody someday may throw enough money at him to leave but it will not be North Texas. Sorry. Ray Harper at WKU = Rick Insell at MTSU. Only with more NCAA wins.

I don't know where anyone could get the idea we'd hire Harper away from WKU came from. No way is that gonna happen. Dude grew up less than an hour from Bowling Green and coached D2 ball in the bluegrass as well.

When I first heard the rumors, I really did not think JJ had a good shot (we haven't been the the NCAA's since 2010 and it's one of those out of sight, out of mind deals), but things seem to indicate he has a decent shot at this gig.

I am becoming concerned.

the idea came from side show joe who equated hiring clint bowen 'out from under us' with us being your farm club i guess...lol.

he must be into a full jug of the 'alliance kool-ade' and considers sun belt schools unt property.

anyhoo...back to hoops. i'd hate to see jj leave. one of my favorite hilltopper haven amigos has been on the jj/unt bandwagon for years and he's one of the few i actually respect on our board.

but...if you lose him i expect unt to do well. you guys are committed to hoops and your best days are definitely ahead.

Wow. Perhaps the most ludicrous statement made on behalf of Harper yet.

For starters, they have the same number of "NCAA wins" if we're counting play-in games.

Furthermore, whereas Harper has ties to the area, MT is Insell's alma mater.

Talk to me when Harper has made seven consecutive trips to the postseason, won five regular season championships and four tournament championships.

Home is home. I still like the guy as a coach, and think the WKU program will continue to have a bright future with him there. I hope we don't lose Jones. With Mitchell staying another year, maybe that will work in our favor, if LSU does come calling.

FWIW, Clint Bowen's D allowed over 200+ yards to Dunbar when he was at WKU. His D allowed over 200+ yards to Rainey when he was at UNT. The man must be a good salesman to keep getting hired by other schools.

I still haven't seen anyone post Harper's salary. That makes me believe we could afford him, if we wanted him.

you're just looking stupid now.

ray's first year salary is 375k. we bumped willie t. up to 475k after one year of success and the money isn't even it.

and bowen didn't work out that great. he lost to the team he left. kinda got dominated on his dee.

i like the one we have now better anyway. guidry's the man.

you can't afford ray.

Call it what you want, but UNT is still 4-1 against WKU in football. Glad you like your DC.

If Harper's only making 375k, we could afford to pay him more. There would have to be reasons other than money for him to want to stay at WKU. I'm not saying we would target him, just that I like him as a candidate. That is a complement. I don't understand the need to name call.

Wait a second. If you could afford to pay more than what Harper is making, why aren't you paying Johnny Jones that kind of money??

I am pretty sure JJ makes more than 400K a year when all things are added in.

as he should be. he's done a fine job down there.

ray is making that in his first year so we didn't exactly lowball him.

mcdonald made 250k his first year and got a 100k raise for winning the sun belt his first year and winning a game in the ncaa.

i always said he shoulda kicked some of that raise omv's way because him and his enormous sack is what did both of those things. aj slaughter and sergio kerusch and jeremey evans helped out but omv was the straw that stirred that drink.

any word on jj to lsu???

The more time that goes by, the better chance I think he has. I just hope LSU makes a decision soon.

When schools hire a coach that doesn't work out, they tend to go in the opposite direction the next time around.

Trent Johnson came from the West Coast, had few ties to the south and none to Louisiana and LSU.

That's another reason I think this time they give a shot to one of their own.

Supposedly one of LSU's private jets they use for recruiting was in Dallas for a several hours yesterday. I'd be flat out lying is I said I wasn't concerned.

@laxtonto #UNT made overtures to Marshall of the #Shockers and Scott Sutton of #ORUn and hearing they're talking to Thompson of #UTSA.

One of those names aren't like the others...
