I would only see Liberty University being taken into some conference that has a total lack of understanding of their beliefs or unless someone personally is making millions as kick backs recommending them.

agreed. Doesnt Liberty still have a rule that prohibits public display's of affection?

I may get it a little wrong but basically I was told that the Liberty administration, lead by Jerry Falwell's son now since he died a few years ago, believed that 9/11 was at least partially done by our government because God wanted it done to punish us. (Hope I didn't state that wrong in any way.)

Guess they still cannot drink, or show public affection, and go to church every day or whatever.

It is my understanding that their biology department teaches creationist science and doesn't acknowledge evolutionary science, which pretty much makes any Bachelor of Science degree from there not worth the paper it's printed on.

Wow, such an enlightened group of open-minded individuals in this thread. I feel much more more intelligent just listening to this dialogue.

I also thoroughly enjoy seeing Liberty dismissed for being out of the conference's footprint by many of the same folks salivating over UTSA. You do realize that the Roadrunners are over 300 miles away your closest member in Denton. And if UNT bolts, the next closest member would be 415 miles east down I-10. That's not much different than our 446 from Atlanta and we're just a shade over 200 miles from possible target Charlotte.

I get that many of you have personal feelings about the guy who founded our school who has been dead for several years now (although the examples listed in this thread are not well researched). As for whether or not we'd be a cultural fit for the Deep South, that may be the longest stretch. Yeah, a school of Evangelical Christians certainly wouldn't fit in well in the Deep South. Wait, what? Here are some facts to consider before dismissing Liberty's candidacy out of hand:

School .............................. TV Mkt ... Enrollment .... 2011 Football Attendance

Arkansas-Little Rock ............... 56 ........ 13,167 .................. N/A
Arkansas State ..................... 181 ....... 13,438 .................. 21,257
Florida Atlantic ...................... 38 ........ 29,290 .................. 17,565
Florida International ............... 16 ........ 47,966 ................... 18,411
Louisiana-Lafayette ............... 124 ....... 16,885 .................. 29,171
Louisiana-Monroe .................. 137 ......... 8,400 .................. 15,512
Middle Tennessee State .......... 29 ........ 24,660 .................. 18,407
North Texas ........................... 5 ......... 33,422 ................. 18,864

Texas State .......................... 47 ........ 34,113 .................. 15,102
UTSA ................................... 36 ........ 31,114 .................. 35,521

Notes: Arkansas-Little Rock does not sponsor football and Charlotte won't have a team on the field until 2013. As for television markets, Appy is listed as Charlotte but is far removed from either the Queen City or the Triad. And Liberty's active enrollment when online students are added tot he count well exceeds 70k. And those attendance numbers come as we have big name schools like Charleston Southern & Gardner-Webb coming into our crib to draw a crowd.

Of Note: Troy only has 7,144 students on its main campus. The 29,000+ represents Troy schools that are in other locations such as Dothan, Montgomery, Bagdad, Vietnam, and Hing Kong, to name a few.

So I'll count you among those eliminating Texas State & UTSA. And for the record, Jonesboro isn't exactly in the heart of the Sun Belt either. I take it you didn't read my prior post very closely where I referenced the footprint.

You sure? we are within reasonable driving distance of 7 different SBC schools.

As for Texas State and UTSA, those are considerations to give media markets and a continues presence in the fertile texas recruiting ground should UNT bolt.

I live in Houston and covered sports in Austin & San Antonio for years (I've probably been to more Texas State games than most anyone without direct connections to the school). I fully understand the attractive nature of of those schools. But there is no denying that they are about as far out of the geographic footprint as Lynchburg.

And yes, I'm well aware of Arkansas-Louisiana logistics. But there is no denying that you guys are an outlier for the conference especially if UNT bolts.

For the record, we've got a pretty sweet little set-up for an FCS school ... a level where you would find the majority of SBC teams in the not too distant past.

We already sponsor enough sports for FBS qualifications (something the majority of FCS can't boast) and have done so while maintaining Title IX compliance. Our facilities stack up VERY well against Sun Belt schools.

Im not arguing that you guys arent ready for a move, my argument is that it really doesnt make a lot of sense to expand the conference into Virginia, unless we know for certain that there is absolutely no chance of westward expansion.

We're 4 hours from MTSU and 5 from ULM and WKU. ULL may be the outlier if the league went to Virginia.

If Charlotte is the next addition as rumored, then we would be even less of an outlier.

I don't care what your attendance or anything else is. As a biologist, I promise you I would never hire someone with a degree from liberty. A biology degree from liberty is absolutely worthless. It's like someone who believes the world is flat trying to get a degree in aerospace engineering. Academically, Liberty shouldn't even be considered a school, at least not for science.

I wouldn't worry. We would have to run out of FCS candidates before getting to them. I have not heard anyone mention Liberty. More than likely they are trying to inject themselves into this expansion at the 11th hour. If we're going that far outside the footprint, better to take ODU and JMU which are cultural fits.

We'll take that in consideration the next time that we line up our biologists on the field against Georgia State. Then again, based on what we have seen in two years of Panthers football they might stand a chance of winning.
