Uh, no. The shooting occured in Sanford (basically downtown Orlando), though the young man was from an area of Miami...I beleive Miami Gardens. We're all watching this case with concern and disgust, however, it's the Orlando area that is in a tumult.
as someone that was born in orange memorial in orlando and lived off lee road in winter park i can assure you that sanford is NOWHERE NEAR downtown orlando. not even close. i have many relatives that live in sanford. hell...you gotta go through altamonte springs and casselberry before you get to sanford and i'm not even counting winter park.

Well it's a heckuva lot closer to Downtown Orlando than S. Florida. It's by the Orlando Airport; sorry missed downtown by 10 miles. What difference does it make anyways, it's the Orlando 'area' not S. Florida, that was my point.

Eh, I've seen more crazy things in my college experience. My most funny thing to see was a female campus police officer getting on a table at a party and booty dancing with frat guys then getting fired the next day.

Why would the National news cover a chick going apeshit crazy and screaming at people? Besides a possible sore forehead from that one kid noone got hurt. This is a local story at best NOT national news.

That sucks for that kid. Based on what the attackers said to him I'm assuming they are black. I find it so odd that people are willing to do these things to each other solely based on the color of their skin.
Now, that kid who got killed in Florida may or may not have been killed because of racism, however people who see that as an opportunity to bring all this racist bull**** back need to calm the **** down. Bah, they are all ******* idiots anyway...
This thread is getting sad. The Florida case became a powder keg because a unarmed kid, regardless of color, was gunned down and the gunman is still free. I told my wife when the story finally broke that 1) the gunman is going to be a classic wannabe cop and 2) this is going to explode if only because the gunman was not arrested. Now lets not pretend here that the media did any better job of reporting this story than any other case being cited on this thread. The media by an large only picked up on the Trayvon Martin case 20 plus days after he was killed. Its not like this was national news when it happened. The internet kept this story from dying.

So as new details emerge that show that this "kid" was in fact a thief and drug user it is funny watching people's minds get blown. The main witness to the altercation (that shouldn't have occured anyways) states that he observed Martin beating up the wanna be cop pretty bad (to which his injuries seems probable), and the hispanic guy calling for help over and over before the shot rang out. That and the hispanic man Zimmerman, has a black friend already coming forward on his behalf explaining how Zimmerman tutors black children during his free time along with his wife totally taking race out of the equation. However the civil rights "activist" have already invested so much effort (much like the Duke Lacrosse Team problem) they can't call off the dogs at this point, so the media storm continues.
I remember this vividly.........one of the worst things I have ever read about. What made it so horrible was that the media chose to not even report most of it nationally. However if things had been reversed....................

At this point you have multiple stories and a media circus. Personally I think you draw a line in the timeline where Zimmerman calls the police and is advised to not pursue the perp. Everything goes South after he ignores them and injects himself and a gun into the situation. When Zimmerman says "They always get away.." at that point he made a decision to take matters into his own hands. The fact that this a smaller police force probably had a lot to do with the mismanagement on the police side. Now you just have a media circus and a month removed from the shooting. Makes it hell for the investigators charged with unraveling this mess.
The student's outburst seems to have been partially due to the Martin-Zimmerman case. News of that shooting is all over the media in the Palm Beach (FAU) and Miami markets, as well as in the Orlando area.
Sanford is the Seminole County seat town of around 50,000 people 20-plus miles north of Orlando, in a different county and having little to do with Orlando. Sanford is older than Orlando and was a very successful port and rail and agricultural city (St. John's River and Lake Monroe) before Orlando was much of anything. Sanford people were pretty closed off to most outsiders until the last couple of decades as Orlando growth moved north. Sanford is now modern with its own major mall, regional zoo, is the southern terminus for Auto Train, has an international airport (not Orlando's airport) and is relatively close to New Smyrna Beach. Its downtown and Riverwalk are very nice.
I spent my teenage years in Sanford and found it to be a great home town. It does not deserve the treatment it is getting from the national media and all the Al Sharpton wannabes.
Now as more details of the investigation leak and we hear from witnesses, it appears the Sanford police were not so incompetent after all. With conflicting information, the police were correct to turn the case over to the state attorney, who was investigating and could have either charged Zimmerman, not charged him or presented the case to a grand jury. Now, the same thing is being done by state and federal police and state judicial entities. Justice was being served. Now, thanks to the uproar based on just one side of the story, justice is in the hands of outsiders.
