Teddy Greenstein, Chicago Tribune: Hey, Kevin, when it became clear the Big East was losing two of its best teams, was there any thought to trying to put a provision in requiring that the representative from the Big East have a, say, top 12 or top 15 ranking? Was that discussed?

Kevin Weiberg: It has not been discussed in that way. We have had ongoing discussions, however, about, you know, what are the standards for automatic qualification for conferences in the future? How can we establish a standard that works for those who already have it, and provides a fair evaluation for those conferences? But how also then can we establish a criteria that allows conferences that don't have automatic qualification to be able to reach that level? And that's been the ongoing focus and discussion. I have never thought about a single year as being a fair evaluation of a conference.

Now you're right, the Big East is going through membership change, and we're going to have to see as new members come in, what that means for the competitive success of that conference. But to single out a Pittsburgh, for example, this year, and to say that that is the kind of team that has never been in these games just wouldn't be true. I mean we've had a three- or four-loss team virtually every year playing in one of these BCS games. So, I'm not sure it's entirely fair at this point to put all that focus on the Big East. Obviously we've got some work to do relative to automatic qualification standards. And that's an ongoing process that I think will play out into the spring.

The only other thing that I would comment regarding it is just that I know there's been a lot said about why can't we just take in the top eight teams? And I know those of you who cover it in detail understand that situation. But this system has always been one that is built around conference champions. And I know for one, in my conference, even though we've been blessed with some highly-rated teams in recent years, you know, we would -- we would not be in favor of moving in a -- in a direction that would take a champion out of the mix simply to take in teams ranked one through eight.

I took it as they are looking to tweak it some more but still wanting to protect those in the club. As far as the AQ standards he spoke about working on later next spring my guess is the formula on the overall conference they have been talking about the past 6 months. I would not mind if a BCS Automatic Conference Champ is not in the Top 16 then they are not guaranteed that spot that year. They will never go for Top 12 because more then 1 BCS Conference would not meet that standard like the Big Ten and Big East this year.

But he did say what many Big East backers have said this year and that was not the first time or the last time this will happen unless there is some change. The Big East, ACC, Pac 10, SEC and Big 10 all have had BCS Automatic Qualifiers with 3 or more losses.
