Q&A after Barker's visit to OSU for the game with Miami:
Quote:Barker Recaps Ohio State Visit
By Michael Chung
(Editor’s Note: This is the latest contribution to the-Ozone for Michael Chung. We all know quarterbacks now play a bigger role in football than ever before. A good quarterback, as witnessed by last years Indianapolis Colts, can be the difference between a playoff team and a team with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft – which of course they used on a quarterback.
With few exceptions, your quarterback is your destiny.
So all eyes will be on Kentucky QB Drew Barker in the class of 2014. With J.T. Barrett on the way in the 2013 class, Ohio State will likely only take one QB in the class of 2014.
There are currently 4-5 targets on the board and the staff is discussing which ones to offer, but one name at the top of their list is Barker.
Standing 6-3 and 210 pounds out of Conner High School in Hebron, Ky., Barker is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the nation – something Meyer and his staff covet.
He is hoping to make his decision by summer 2013, but Barker already holds early offers from Cincinnati, South Carolina, Louisville and Illinois.
He visited Ohio State for the Miami (Ohio) game this past weekend and took time to share with The-Ozone how his recruiting experience, and the visit, are going.
Ozone: You took a visit to Ohio State over the weekend, how did it go?
Barker: It went great. The atmosphere was nuts – 100,000 people in one place. I had been there for the spring game, but the intensity was rocking and the vibe in the air was much more electric than the spring. I was watching the offense and I really like what they are doing, they started slow, but once the game progressed the Buckeyes ran similar things that my high school does so the system fits well with me.
Ozone: Other than attending the game, what did you do?
Barker: I mainly went to the game and came home and then I went to Louisville. I talked to coaches in the locker room, talked to coach (Tom) Herman, and (Kerry) Coombs and coach Meyer sent a greeting. Coach Herman said they are looking at 4-5 QBs that they will offer and I am one they are evaluating. They are watching game film and will follow the season and will decide who to offer. Coach Herman says they will take one QB. If I get offered, I am not sure if I would commit right then and there but it would be an honor to have an OSU offer.
Ozone: Cameron Burrows, Jalin Marshall and Darron Lee also were there; did you talk to them much? What were they doing?
Barker: I did not really talk to them. I talked to Dante Booker a lot. He and I are friends and we sat close to each other. I have a group of elite 2014 recruiting prospects as friends and Dante is one in that group. Dante likes OSU a lot, felt the atmosphere was awesome. I am friends with Raekwon McMillan, Dante Booker, Clifton Thaddeus Snodgrass, Artavis Scott, Orlando Brown, Mikael Horton and a lot of other guys. We have talked about playing together to try to win a championship.
Ozone: Did you receive an offer? If not, what did the coaches tell you as far as an offer?
Barker: They did not, but on ESPN All-Access, I was watching and paused it and there was board in the coaches area. On it was a list of QB prospects and I was No. 1 on the board. Hopefully they offer me and I have a vibe that they like me.
Ozone: Where is Ohio State in regards to your top choices? What are your top four or five schools?
Barker: I do not have a top four or five right now, I am talking to everyone.
Ozone: Do you receive pressure to attend a Kentucky school like UK or Louisville from friends and family?
Barker: UK has not recruited me and Louisville has been talking to me since I was 15 years old. I really like Louisville and the coaches but do not feel pressure to go there because it’s my home state.
Ozone: Who have been your closest friends during the recruiting process?
Barker: Outside of the list of prospects I listed earlier, I would add Clifton Garrett to that list.
Ozone: Coaches were allowed to call you on Sept. 1; did coaches call you at midnight?
Barker: Yeah I got a bunch: Ohio State, Alabama, South Carolina, Miss St., Oregon, Cincinnati, UCLA, Tennessee, LSU, South Carolina, Michigan, Michigan State. I didn’t get to bed until 1:30 a.m.
