Not sure about the source but...

MemphisRoar ‏@MemphisRoar

According to Dominic Woodson's mentor Kevin Robinson, the list for Woodson is Memphis, Cincy, URI, SCarolina & Gonzaga. Marshall not on it.

Dominic Woodson would certainly be a welcome addition. Looks like he needs some serious conditioning and focus but his skill ceiling is undeniable, he is about as close to Yancy Gates as you can get.

I am all for adding a big man, but when Chad's assessment says this:

Quote:He's a low motor version of Yancy. Marinate on that for a minute...

I am a little hesitant to get excited about him.

Those are certainly the aspects of Yancy Gates I would not care to bring back to Cincinnati.

Looking back, I'd gladly take another Yancy Gates, even with the frustrating parts.

Yes, but the intangibles are what it usually comes down to. Can player x be motivated? Can Mick motivate him?
YG could drive you crazy but even half a Yancey is better than the stiffs we have used since his departure. You guys seem to have a lot of faith in Strickland so I don't know if we should pursue or not. I guess I'll just trust Mick.

I dont have too much faith in strickland. After all he is a freshmen who has come off two knee surgerys. But I am just hoping he is better than what he already have, which isnt a hard thing to do.

RE: 2013 Basketball Recruiting Thread
Woodson sounds like a kid who is a bit lazy and unmotivated. Yet he wants to go to a program where he can play immediately.

He obviously wants the fast track to the NBA and the $$$. Is he willing to work hard for it?

I think a lot of these kids think the NBA is a cakewalk and get knocked down trying to get there because they underestimate how hard you have to work on your game and physical shape.

I saw Strickland this week. He was with Check and G'lawn and he looked just about as tall as Check but much thicker. He appears body wise to be exactly what we need. Now as you say
we hope the knees hold up. You will be impressed by the size.

With Black transfering out of memphis and to kansas(Kansas is going to be something else next year) that opens up another spot on the memphis roster. I see him landing at memphis here soon

Please try to take this as constructive, but unless you personally know a lot more for a fact that you are letting on, this is a pretty ridiculous post to hang on Woodson.

I'm not saying he's a model player or not in any sense - I really don't know. But from what I've read Baylor rather unexpectedly had two big men return to school rather than declare for the pros. So apparently they wanted Woodson to redshirt which he had no interest in. Thus the de-commit. So yeah, I guess you could say he wanted to play immediately in a program, but I'm not sure that makes him lazy and unmotivated as opposed to just trying to find the best fit and opportunity for himself and not sit out a year. What's so bad about that?

Here's a few (not cherry-picked btw) comments from ESPN's analysis (#12 C; #90 overall in his class) of him:
Quote:Strengths:
- This is a big with a diverse skill set.
- Absolutely committed to rebounding
- Very good finisher
- face up game is legit from the baselines and mid-wing area.
- Because of his IQ, you can run offense with him and he's an ideal high-post passer. Remarkable feel as a passer for a kid his size.

Weaknesses:
- Athletically he's average and therefore has to rely more on his skill and knowledge around the floor.
- (needs) a scoring move in the paint with a counter and more explosion going to the rim.

Bottom Line:
- been coached and wants to get better and takes coaching well.
- Can play in just about any offense because of his overall skill set.

I'm not saying that proves he isn't a bit lazy or unmotivated or unwilling to work for things. Most of us know we can find almost any type of comment about any player even by so-called experts if you search hard enough. But it sure paints a very different picture than what you said and implied about him fwiw.

@ Hawkeye:

Read post #81 of this thread: http://www.bearcattalk.com/showthread.php?t=6306&page=9

I'm sorry, I meant to reference it in my post. Here is the quote from Gametime, aka Chad Brendel of Bearcatlair:

"He's a low motor version of Yancy. Marinate on that for a minute... " - Chad Brendel on Bearcattalk.com

His comment was not meant to be a compliment of Woodson. Woodson is considered lazy.

I was all excited until Chad deflated my enthusiasm with that post. LOL.

RE: 2013 Basketball Recruiting Thread
I say if he wants to come here take him. One day we'll have big man actually be someone the opponent fears, of course that will happen when our guards are crap.
We continue to run an offense that from April to October we are told will press, defend and play above the rim...penetrate, kick it, drain it, crash the boards. From November through march it is ...we lose if we're not draining the three.
One good post player and it immediately frees up fractions of seconds for our guards to square up and shoot. Our guards have been pretty decent but opponents have known we're not going
down in to the paint for our primary offense. Tough to run a half court o if you have stiffs in the middle.

I agree with you when you're not making animal sounds. 02-13-banana

Seriously, yes, a low post that can score opens up the lanes for everyone else to shoot from the perimeter or attack the basket. Nobody paid attention to Mbodj, Nyarsuk, or JJ as serious offensive threats.

I'd take a low motor version of Yancy. The bigs UC has taken outside of Gates havent' been any good so why not? If he remains lazy and unmotivated after a few years then it's very likely the two would part ways at that point.
