Wolf Pack athletics: WAC asks Nevada to stay, but Pack says no
Is the WAC Grasping for Straws?
By: Jay Walker
The Western Athletic Conference has been looking for more football members since Boise State, Nevada, Hawai’i and Fresno State announced they were leaving the league.
Boise State played in the Mountain West this year, but is headed for the Big East in football. The other three schools head to the Mountain West next season.
Since then, WAC Commissioner Karl Benson has been looking for someone, anyone, to keep his football league afloat. The WAC added Texas State and Texas-San Antonio from the Southland Conference for all sports. They’ve also added Seattle, Texas-Arlington, Denver and now, Boise State (again) for non-football sports.
In 2012, the WAC will have seven football playing schools. They need eight. They have a waiver for a couple of years, but time is ticking away. The WAC will have to announce the addition of another football school by July 1, 2012 in order to continue to be viable in 2014.
Benson’s latest solution? Trying to get schools to reconsider.
Ouch.

Karl Benson on Wednesday asked Nevada, Fresno State and Hawaii to reconsider and remain in the WAC, but the Wolf Pack is sticking with the Mountain West.
