It's not an accident. DU is investing more money into basketball, and it showing in the results. The Pioneers get a lot of bang for the athletic bucks they spend, and it's a non-football success model that other schools might want to consider...

DU is a $25 million dollar athletic department with all facilities less than 12 years old. Without football, the resources go into sports where DU has a chance to be nationally competitive. DU has the top D-I non-football athletic dept. in America for the last four years in a row as measured by the NACDA cup.

The Pioneers are NCAA Title threats in hockey, skiing, and men's lacrosse right now. Gymnastics, Men's and Women's Soccer, Mens and Women's Golf and Mens and women's tennis are all frequent NCAA tourney-caliber programs. Women's basketball made the NIT last year, and should be a 20 win program this year, and the men's hoops is showing huge progress toward conference success and a post-season future. The mens and women's swimming teams are fast moving toward NCAA qualifiers. The only average program Denver has right now is women's volleyball, which just fired it's 16 year coach with a .516 record.

DU's had all this success despite having to fly to 80% of its games, due to its location and far flung conferences - Sun Belt, ECAC lacrosse, WCHA hockey, etc.

The best part about DU's success in my mind is that the school has a 90% graduation rate and a 3.4 overall GPA, which exceeds that of the general student body.

If DU had a football program, it would not be able to have all these other sports do so well...

And if you were located in the Southeast, you would have added football by now because the majority of Southern college sports fans would gladly make that trade.
