Why the ACC should pull for Clemson & Va Tech this Weekend
EVERY team in the ACC should pull for Clemson & Va Tech to win this weekend (except for NC State & North Carolina, I suppose) for this reason: If both of those teams win out, there is a really good chance that the ACC runner-up could get the first BCS at-large bid in conference history. Why should you care? Trickle-down effect. Look what happens to the other bowl teams if the ACC gets 2 BCS bids:

bowl with bowl with increased
ACC team 1 BCS bid 2 BCS bids payout, mil$
============ ========== ========== ==========
1 Va Tech Orange Bowl Orange Bowl $0
2 Clemson Chick-fil-A Sugar Bowl $13.03+
3 Florida State Champs Sports Chick-fil-A $1.65+
4 Virginia Sun Bowl Champs Sports $0.32+
5 Ga Tech Belk Bowl Sun Bowl $0.30+
6 Wake Forest Music City Belk Bowl $0.14-
7 North Carolina Independence Music City $0.69
8 Miami (FL) Military Bowl Independence $0.29

When you add up the increased payouts, you get an extra $15.28 million, or an extra $1.27 million per team. THAT'S WHY you want a second BCS bid!

NOTE 1: I have no idea why the Belk Bowl is ahead of the Music City Bowl which now pays more (sorry Wake Forest; congrats UNC).

NOTE 2: Since the ACC doesn't have enough teams to fill all of its bowl tie-ins, they would forfeit $860,000 for the Military Bowl.

NOTE 3: SELECTION ORDER -- Fiesta, Suger, Orange (IMPORTANT: If a Bowl loses its host team, it jumps to the front of this order. This rule could allow the ACC to jump the PAC or B12 (whichever is NOT in the NC game).

If you want to help the ACC, root for FSU, Georgia Tech, and Clemson to pull a SEC East sweep. It will do wonders for the league's reputation.

RE: Why the ACC should pull for Clemson & Va Tech this Weekend
I'm not sure if the ACC could get this second BCS bid, but it would be awesome. The problem is VT and Clemson would play in the ACC championship and someone will have 2 losses and may get passed over for someone else like one of the 2-loss Big 10 teams, an undefeated Houston or Stanford with Andrew Luck as a major draw. I would think we'd rather have VT win the ACC since Clemson according to that NY Times article has 1.7 million fans opposed to VT's 1.1 mil (can't remember for sure). So Clemson would travel better than VT and thus would be more attractive as an option for that last or next-to-last BCS at-large bid. Don't know this for sure but it would seem that's the case.

I thought the second BCS bowl in a conference only gets like $4.5M not $13M

RE: Why the ACC should pull for Clemson & Va Tech this Weekend
After watching VT and UNC last night, the ACC was pulling for VT already. Refs gave some big breaks to VT. Don't want to hear anymore about Swofford favoring UNC after watching some of the laughable calls in that game added to the calls Clemson got vs WF. Doesn't really bother me too much because VT is better team, but you could see the ACC was trying to ensure VT and Clemson had only one loss heading into Championship game. Oh well, basketball season has started anyway!

Maybe the best possible scenario is for UNC, Duke, Virginia, and Maryland to be dominant in basketball, while Clemson, Va Tech, Florida St, Miami, and Ga Tech are dominant in football. I think the ACC office should give favorable Scheduling to help those teams in both sports (e.g. the SEC allows South Carolina & Florida to schedule a "cupcake" before Rivalry Week). I cannot condone favoritism in officiating on the field/court, however. Help the marquee teams, but draw the line at tampering with the games themselves.

I think the Clemson/Wake Forest game was just poorly officiated all around, with no clear cut advantage to Clemson. However, I can see where you might think the Va Tech/UNC officiating did favor the Hokies. I think VT probably would have won anyways, but...

All the signs point towards the 10th loss in 11 tries since 2001 against the Gaggers. :muttering:

ACC goes 1-2 against the most down SEC East in recent memory. Sad. This league needs to go kidnap all the QBs in the MAC ... because damn near half the MAC has a better QB than the entire conference.

While you're at it, better kidnap some offensive linemen and some run-stopping DL and LB... I can't even enjoy beating UVa after this pathetic showing. At least VT will probably go back to the Orange Bowl to play the Big East champ (again!).

Congrats to FSU, btw... Not for being so good, but for having such a lousy SEC rival.
