RE: Week 11 Attendance
Yes, you got me. My blinding hatred for FIU caused me to lose the ability to notice how many people were in the stadium last night. This despite the fact I attended the game with friends who are FIU fans (one of which works for the school).
I wasn't doing anything more then posting an observation. I thought my initial post was harmless. If you choose to be insulted by it, that's on you.

RE: Week 11 Attendance
What a ridiculous thread.
It would appear there are more than 7,000 people in those pictures, but unless the non pictured sections are 100% full, it's definitely closer to 7,000 than it is to 17,000.

So you didn't attend the ASU @ FAU game? I would think you would be a season ticket holder for FAU. With the debt on that new stadium, fans can't be hoping for free tickets to go see FAU at home.

I did attend that game and I am a season ticket holder. There was about 8K or 9K there. What's your point? Geez...I was only making an observation...I really didn't intend to start an arguement. I rarely go to FIU games, so when I saw this thread, I commented. It wasn't meant as an insult, yet you seem to be taking this very personally. If you read my original post, it was hardly mean-spirited. The number just struck me as funny because, at over 17K, it would have meant that the stadium was about 90% full, which it clearly wasn't. I agree with MTPiKapp...this is a ridiculous thread.

I also said that the crowd did fill in some, the photos were taken in the 1st quarter...but unless 10k people walked into the stadium the moment after I took those pictures I still call BS (a lot of BS) on that attendance number.
So your saying there are only 7,000 there in those pictures (not including the west and north stands; which are not pictured)? And yes, I would say there are another 3-4 thousand still to come into the two sections pictured (from tailgating, etc.) not to mention another thousand or so to come into the westand north stands.
Beyond this, don't you think you have bigger things to worry about than FIU and its attendance....you know, like hiring a new coach, winning a football game, getting people to care about you, paying off your stadium bond, etc.
Why is this so personal for you? I honestly didn't mean to start anything or mean any disrespect to FIU. If you can't tell the difference between 7,000 and 17,000 people in a stadium, then I really don't know what to say. Your team played great yesterday, won the game and has the trophy to prove it. How does me questioning an arbitrary attendance number in a thread about attendance ruin any of that??
And I am very well aware of our problems....as you guys know a smart coaching hire can turn things around in a hurry. I'm hopeful we can do the same. I've been saying for years, the best thing for both schools would be to have good teams playing each other every year. Unfortunately, when we are good, you guys aren't and now you guys are good and we suck. Good luck the rest of the way...
Calling out FIU this week when you did not call out FAU's week 10 18k attendance shows what your true intents are. Owlfamily and even BMarkey said there was 9-10K at that game. No comments or pics from you regarding that announced attendance but your disdain for these "announced" numbers forced you to have multiple responses to FIU attendance. Yeah, sure you are not hating.
BINGO! And that's my point from the beginning, including the non-attending season ticket holders that are part of the announced crowd, plus the fact that stadium filled up quite a bit more in the second quarter.

Guys really? FIU fans please relax. I don't see how the FAU fan was taking a shot at us... He was right in his assessment that there weren't 17k fans there, although I would guess about 15k at the peak. I thought the turnout was ok considering FAU was 0-8 coming into the game. (No disrespect FAU, just stating facts). Hopefully once we close the bowl next year, attendance numbers will continue to rise...

That's the second time someone has cast blame on FAU for their record. When you're playing your biggest and closest geographic rival, I really don't see how their record should have any influence on your attendance.
If I could only attend one conference game in any given year, it would be WKU because I want to beat Western in every game in every sport. I don't care if they're 8-0 or 0-8, I don't care if we've beaten them ten straight years or lost to them ten straight years, that's the game I'd pick every time.
I'd think FAU/FIU fans would feel the same.

Because to be honest, I wouldn't place the rivalry with FAU on a huge level yet. We haven't been playing football long enough to make it a large and competitive rivalry. Sure I would rather beat FAU than any team in the conference, but this isn't Alabama-Auburn or anything like that. As a result, the record does play a role in attendance. It also didn't help attendance that we lost to WKU the week before and along with it went any hopes of splitting the SBC title. I think the WKU loss was more of a factor than FAU's record.

I think the main problem is that when FAU was good, FIU was terrible, and now that FIU is good, we are awful. If the teams were competitive at the same time, the game would be big.

We're not, a rivalry isn't created by geographic distance or because you are in the same conference. It is embraced by everyone from the administration to fans. The fans have spoken.

Then who, pray tell, is FIU's rival(s)?

No one, most FIU fans think it is scUM but that's crazy on various levels. Compare attendance against Duke (who brought, just as many people as FAU) vs. the FAU game and you will see the difference. Heck, there were more people in attendance at the ULL game than FAU. A team doesn't have to have a rival, and it can not be manufactured.

I think someone else hit on it earlier when they said that the two teams haven't been good at the same time. The potential for the rivalry is big, of course if one of the two moves onto CUSA, it will probably die right there.

You are absolutely right. Most people think that FIU and UM are rivals, which makes absolutely no sense. This is because both schools are in Dade county and are less than 10 miles apart while FAU is in Broward county and is about 45 minutes to an hour away. No one really sees this as a rivalry except die-hard FIU and FAU fans.

Check your history. We did not join the conference at the same time; we've been members since '98. FAU joined to save the football league from extinction in 2005 following the exodus of NMS, Idaho and USU.
As a matter of fact, I remember being in the conference when La Tech was still around. We've also been a member longer than MTSU, UNT, ULM and Troy.
So no, they are not our rivals, just another SBC school we play.
