Brian Gregory's debut
The game was full of things not seen from a GT basketball team in ... well ... a decade plus. Basics like ...

- An assist to turnover ratio higher than the average MLB batting average
- Considerably above 50% FT shooting
- Spreading the ball around
- Efficient shooting from the field

Hope to see this trend continue.

Sounds like it's been a rough couple of years.

Equally amusing was hearing George Mason fans bemoan their Paul Hewitt debut.

- Inability to inbounds
- No half court offense whatsoever
- Inability to shoot FTs
- Bizarre use/waste of timeouts

Allow me to demonstrate my own homemade montage of epic Paul Hewitt:

I made it to exactly a minute and shut it off. Point made and taken.

I guess I missed that Gregory moved over to GT. Dayton fans were rejoicing in the streets to see that guy go. Hopefully he can do well at Tech.

I'll trade Paul Hewitt for anybody who can coach people to inbound, shoot FTs, and have some semblance of a half court offense at this point.

...and win a national championship instead of getting all the way to the title game, right? Oh, lord.

Blind squirrels find nuts, too. Did you watch that video I put up? That was all in just ONE GAME. And note that there are at least 3 GT players on the court who are NBA first round draft picks.

I should mention that the team that dragged Hewitt with them to the Final Four went TEN DEEP with players who played in the NBA after their college career was over. If it weren't for Jarrett Jack's ability to go Rambo at point guard amidst a fetid half court offense, they wouldn't have gone nearly so far. The Universe later crashed back to reality in Hewitt land, as the following season despite losing only one starter (SG) and one backup, GT limped into the tournament and exited quickly in the first round.

I understand your frustration with Hewitt, seemed like a guy who underachieved with almost every roster he had. Its just really ironic that the guy that replaced him has the exact same track record.

It is really simple: he was cheap. Hewitt's golden contract, which automatically renews and automatically raises base pay every year, will cost GT a fortune. Failure to renew Hewitt's contract at any point is to buy out the full 7 years at full cost.

Dayton fans were thrilled to see Gregory (and his contract) gone. People liked him on a personal level, he does seem to be a good guy, but the knock on him was he didn't help his players improve over the years (see Chris Wright) I've always liked the guy and hope he does well there, but my guess is that several years down the road you'll be disappointed with the results you see.

Our problem was the opposite. Individuals were always coached up. But they were never EVER coached to play as a team. Imagine having 3 or more NBA first round draft picks on the floor and not being able to inbound the ball ... or not being able to shoot more than 60% from the FT line as a team. Just infuriating to watch. We operated an Allen Iverson 76ers offense ... without A.I.
