If you did play Duke in the 1940's, you would have lost. Back then they were top-5! Here are the results from 1941, their best year ever:

Duke 19 Tennessee 0
Duke 50 Maryland 0
Duke 27 Colgate 14
Duke 27 Pittsburgh 7
Duke 14 Ga Tech 0
Duke 20 UNC 0
Duke 55 NC St 6

4 shut-outs! World War II did strange things to football recruiting...

The year that the Rose bowl was played in Durham ('42 or '43) the Duke team that played in the game was undefeated and UN-SCORED UPON during the regular season. BTW they lost the Rose Bowl game.

I think Pitt will continue to do well in football but I worry about Syracuse in the ACC despite their improvement overall this year.

I think that depends on recruiting. There are 2 reasons to think recruiting will improve at both Syracuse and Pitt:
(1) Joining the ACC will change the minds of some kids who didn't want to play in the Big East
(2) Problems at Penn St will make some kids available who would've gone there.

(3) Better coaching than the recent past
