The plan to build a new home for the Jets took a huge hit today...

But the whole idea of playing in this new stadium is that it was going to be a dome. I dont think the Giants new stadium is going to be a dome. At least i dont think it will be. This whole ordeal is so frustrating. I thought it was a done deal after the lawsuit was tossed out. Sheldon Silver is an idiot.

Who didn't see this coming.
A huge stadium - and even the Olympics in NYC, moreover on Mahattan, itself is a bad idea. Traffic already is a mess travelling around that island and it would only get worse. Its actually VERY GOOD that they turned down the proposal to those on the island.
The Olympics are going to be in either London or Paris - the buzz is Paris, but London is making a very strong case. Saw pictures over the weekend in which they turned the Champs-Elyssee into a track - which was beautiful with the Arc d' Triumph in the background.

If the Westside stadium doesn't get built, does that mean the Jets and Giants will again share the new stadium in NJ? or are the Jets staying put in the old meadowlands? I mean, if they're sharing, since the new stadium is still being drawn up, couldn't the Jets chip in for a retractable roof to be built? That way, the stadium becomes so much more useful, and could serve as the alternative to the Big Apple Bowl.

It wasn't the Jets that wanted the retractable roof. Which is why they weren't going to pay for it. The proposal was for a stadium and a convention center. It was the convention center that needed the roof. Supposedly, the roof and the expansion of the Javitts Center was the $600,000 the state and city were going to half to pony up.
The stadium part of the equation was what the Jets were paying.
Jets management even said that if the stadium were built they would stay play their games with the roof open.
Cheers,
Neil

The BE is having a tough off season and needs a commish that will push its FB to the next level
not just watch as bowls leave the league in the cold.

-- Tough off season? Our BCS bid is secured...the BCS rules were changed to help us and our bowl situation is coming along well....its seems very possible that we will have 5 bowl games for 9 schools (ND inculded)...and even after all of the defections our bowl payouts will at worse remain the same and may even go up......
-- summer 2003 was a tough off season...so far this one is working out fine

What about starting the bowl at Syracuse and then moving to NYC if a dome or retractable roof is ever available. 50,000 is plenty of seats for a Bowl game and it would help out an important Big East
City.

That thought has run thru my mind several times. But I will tell you why it would be very difficult to make it happen., SNOW. Upstate NY in January or the end of december is very unpredictable. Because of the lake affect snows from lake Ontario and Erie, sometimes the weathermen fail to predict a storm. You can get 2 or 3 feet of snow when it was predicted to get a few inches. For some reason, Buffalo is better known for getting a lot of snow, but Syracuse traditionally gets at least a couple of feet more of snow than Buffalo gets on a yearly basis.
The other drawback is Syracuse is not a very large town, and they dont have enough hotel rooms to accomodate 35 to 45,ooo visitors at once.

Bowl Game would be realistic when Destiny gets built. Hotels won't be a problem. However, a bowl in Syracuse should probably be a Big East #5 vs MAC #3 type of affair. Be happy for a game the week before XMas and expect about 25-30,000.

I don't see a 'Cuse bowl being a success. Putting two mediocre teams that locals are unlikely to want to pay to see on a field in a medium sized market prone to bad travel conditions is a recipe for embrassingly low crowds.
I'm very happy the stadium deal got blocked. NYS dosn't need a billion $ pork barrel prroject for the Jets and some investors that many of the locals did not want. This is about the only time the NYS legislator has shown some competence.

Well I have been to five bowls in seven years... Snow for both that were in Detroit and snow in both Boise and Ft. Worth. The only one I went to in good weather was in New Orleans which was the least attended of the five. I also went to the Super Bowl in the snow in Detroit.
I would not have missed any of those events but I do get your point. I would rather be in Miami or Tampa too.....I just meant it would get the Big Apple Bowl started
now as opposed to later. We need Bowls NOW... so what if its our fifth bowl in front of 30,000??? ESPN still televises and you still get the min 750,000 per team. If it moves to a better local fine up the level of the game and payout... There are no other indoor fileds outside of Indy or Detroit within the reach of our conference. I do agree thae dates b-4 Christmas are highly undesirable....UC took over 10,000 both times it fell between the holidays and between 1500 and 2000 the other times. I would suggest a Basketball tourney the same time to make for more events and draw more fans. The Orange and Sugar Bowl I believe still do this.

Nice idea--a Basketball game built around the Bowl Game. A Bowl game really can't work until Destiny gets built. Syracuse needs a tourist draw and potential sponsor for the game and that is 5 years away.
