Done deal: West Virginia headed to the Big 12 Conference

Official announcement expected Wednesday on WVU campus
by Mike Casazza
Charleston Daily Mail

MORGANTOWN -- West Virginia has applied for membership to the Big 12 and been accepted, multiple sources familiar with both sides of the negotiations told The Charleston Daily Mail today. An announcement is expected Wednesday.

The Mountaineers will be the Big 12's 10th team and replace the Missouri Tigers, who are believed to be ready to withdraw from the Big 12 to join the Southeastern Conference.

The details of WVU's move were being finalized Tuesday, specifically when WVU could leave the Big East Conference and join the Big 12, but the sources told the Daily Mail the decision has been approved on both sides.

WVU personnel met today to spread the word across the athletic department and discuss the resolution. An announcement will be only after Missouri says it is leaving the Big 12.

The Big 12's Board of Directors had meeting today to detail the transition from Missouri to WVU, according to a Big 12 source. Officials from that conference will be on WVU's campus Wednesday for a press conference to make an official announcement.

Interesting. ESPN indicated the Big 12 invited West Virginia because of their consistent success of winning on the field and appearances in multiple BCS bowls. Certainly they could have taken the approach of bringing in the biggest TV market they could find and have the team be the doormat of the conference, but they are smart enough to know that the most important thing is that the conference has credibility and can hold their own on the football field. A 2-10 team in a big market only hurts the conference in reputation, thus recruiting for all schools in the conference.

West Virginia deserves it. I get tired of them being put down for academics all the time by the silver spoon thinking ACC. Their mission is to give everyone in West By God Virginia a good education. Not to work on defense contracts, research Shakespearian plays or explore the mating habits of the Chinese beetle.

They have been a good football program for many years. Have great fan support, which should be more important to a potential conference than what percentage of some urban television market they might pull. Especially since the people watching in some of those urban markets are "casual" fans and not die hards.

Hats off to the "other" Mountaineers!
