West Virginias mens basketball team has landed its first commitment for the class of 2006, as Joe Mazzulla, a 6-2 point guard from Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick, R.I., has verbally committed to John Beilein?s squad.
Mazzulla, who just completed his junior year at Bishop Henricken High and will not play at WVU until the 2006-07 season, has displayed his athletic skills in a variety of formats. A member of the soccer team in the fall, Mazzulla has also captured the Rhode Island state championship in the 400-meter dash the past two seasons. He recorded a time of 49.77 last month to win the state meet, and he also helped Henricken to a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay (3:28.37).
Mazzulla has also been very accomplished on the basketball court, averaging 16 points, eight rebounds, six assists and 2.5 steals a game this past season, as he earned all-state honors and was named Rhode Island?s state Gatorade Player of the Year. He has helped lead Bishop Henricken to the past two state basketball titles in Division 1 (large class). He was the MVP of the state playoffs this past season, posting 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists in the championship game.
Those athletic skills, as well as a 3.9 GPA and a 1,400 SAT score, earned Joe a great deal of attention for Division I colleges. Rhode Island, Xavier, Providence, Penn, George Mason and Vanderbilt were some of the other schools which were interested in the left-handed point guard. A starter a Bishop Henricken since midway through his freshman season, Mazzulla has already scored over 1,000-points in his Hawk career.
Mazzulla?s verbal commitment is non-binding. He will be able to sign a National Letter of Intent in November.
