WKU As We Transitioned
Don't want to stir the pot, but just wanted to lay out some stats I've collected. Take it for what it is.

Since WKU began it's transition to FBS we've had highs and lows, more lows as noted by nearly everyone here and especially by WKU fans but since we began our transition, WKU has only won 5 games (Twice over the MUTS, and once over FAU, UL, and ASU....and many times over ourselves). Remarkably, in our 22 losses, 12 of them were by a touchdown or less, another 4 were 2 TD's or less and only 6 have been blowouts.

Here's how we've faired against each SBC team: (We played 3 teams in our first yr of transition in 2007 and 5 in our second yr of transition in 2008).

MUTS (2007-2011) - won 20-17, lost 10-21, lost 24-62, lost 26-27, and won 36-33 for a record of 2-3.
Troy -(2007-2010) lost 17-21, lost 7-17, lost 20-40, lost 14-28 for a record of 0-4
UNT - (2007-2010) lost 26-27, lost 40-51, lost 49-68, lost 6-33 for a record of 0-4
FAU -(2008-2011) lost 20-24, lost 23-29, lost 16-17, won 20-0 for a record of 1-3
FIU - (2008-2010) lost 3-27, lost 20-37, lost 21-28 for a record of 0-3
UL - (2009-2010) lost 22-30, won 54-21 for a record of 1-1
ULM - (2009-2010 ) lost 18-21, lost 30-35 for a record of 0-2
ASU - (2009-2011) lost 20-24, won 36-35, lost 22-26 for a record of 1-2

As you can see above, WKU has been generally on par with this league since we started, except for winning....and yes, I know that's all that really matters. Our worst year of course was the disaster year of 2009 (our first yr as a full FBS member) but even then, we were in 4 of the 8 games. We recovered in 2010 by winning 2 of 8 but also being close in 5 of the six losses. The only game we weren't in last year was against UNT (lost 6-33).

Of the eight teams, only UNT and FIU have beaten us more than once by more than 2 TD's, both twice.

Here's another way to look at it:
In our 5 games with the mighty MUTS, except for 2009, the other four games have been close. We won 2 of those 4.
In our 4 games with the perennial power Troy, we were in 3 of the games, only being blown out in 2009.
In our 4 games with UNT, we were in 2 of the 4. UNT has our number.
in our 4 games with FAU, we were neck and neck in 3 games and beat them soundly this year.
In our 3 games with FIU, we were only in one game, last year's game. Other than that, they've had our number.
In our 2 games with UL, we were in the first game and took care of business last year.
In our 2 games with ULM, we lost by only 3 and 5 respectively.
in our 3 games with ASU, we lost by 4, won by 1 and lost by 4.

We WKU fans, many who visit here regularly, have been silent for quite some time. We typically only post to agree with everyone else about how bad we've been. We've had nothing to be cocky about until now. I think we've turned the corner on this program. I'm not predicting we're gonna win the conference by any stretch this year but folks, the non-stop "WKU is the worst program in football in America" stuff is a bit of a slam on the conference since few of you have dominated us on the field since we started our transition. Our loss to Indiana State (who is 5-2 now and has only 1 loss in the MVC, one of the best FCS conferences in America) was an anomaly and I think it may have been the wake-up call these boys needed. Since that loss, we have seen significant improvement each week and are now 2-1 in the conference. I think our boys are beginning to understand what winning is and how to finish a game.

I don't know what's going to happen this Saturday. UL is fired up and wants revenge and that's a powerful force in football. We'll see.

UL fans, come on up. Be safe on your drive up and back and have fun in God's country but leave with a frown. ;-)

Maybe so after our disastrous OOC start to the season. We'd have to run the table (except for the LSU game) to even get to a winning record but a 4-4 or better record in conference is not out of the realm of possibility given that we seem to be improving each week and may have the psychological monkey off our backs about finishing a game. Saturday's game against UL will tell a lot about this program.

We have yet to play UL, UNT, FIU, ULM, and Troy. We're much improved over last year and against those five, 2 were big losses, 2 were close and 1 was a win.

Then again, what does it really matter? We beat the mighty MUTS at their place this year. Season over. ;-)

don't worry about pikapp amigo.

he's galojay on steroids. only the muts version of him. he's obviously an intelligent guy but he's gonna give you his take (muts-centric/keep western in their place) every time anyone dare to go above my mantra of we're the worst team in north america (now 3rd worst)

he doesn't stop at wku though.....he keeps everyone in line if they post anything he can pick even the teeniest/tiny hole in it. he'll be along soon to correct me.

i'll beat him to the punch. i'm a wku homer d!ck. i'm an old man that's not as smart as him. as mediocre as middle has been (and oh god they have been) wku is off to a worse start thereby i am a lesser person since i'm associated with western.

save it pikapp.....we stand corrected and recognize you as the arbiter of all knowledge in re western kentucky university.

allahu akbar.

It's true, you beat us this year and have earned bragging rights, but I'll take where my program is over where yours is. Good luck on Saturday, would be a huge win for you guys.

Jabbing rights maybe but I'm not sure it's bragging rights to beat the MUTS this year. My quote of "We beat the mighty MUTS at their place this year. Season over." was meant as sarcasm because if I remember correctly there was someone who implied that that win was our Super Bowl. LOL....we weren't nearly as excited about beating the MUTS as we were about beating someone, anyone.

Bragging rights in terms of the rivalry only. I want to beat you guys in every sport possible regardless of the quality of the team in question and I'm sure you feel the same way.

I understand and yes, I want to beat ya'll in every sport but then again, I want all WKU teams to beat all opponents. Honestly, and don't be offended, but the "rivalry" with the MUTS for me is not that big YET. It will evolve into that but realistically, the only time I've really hated the MUTS is in women's basketball....because I respect the status of your program. In all other sports, you're just another Sun Belt team to me. I know that will change but at the moment.....nope.

In men's basketball, I consider UL and USA our greatest rivals. In football, there's no rivalry yet because we've been down so long. But it is nice to see that we've beaten the MUTS since we began transition more than we've beaten any other team in the SBC.

Western is different in my eyes in every sport. We are probably the two most similar programs in the conference and we're the second closest geographically behind FAU/FIU. We're also the most played rivalry in the conference in football and, I believe, in each others top three most played opponents as well.

I agree...the potential for this rivalry is HUGE....and every item you mentioned is right on target. What's hurt is that rarely have both programs been up in each sport simultaneously. In other words, when your football has been up, ours has been down....etc. When both schools have solid years in more than one of the major programs in the same year, you'll see packed stadiums and arenas, huge travel to away games, etc. But as it is, we've been down in all three major sports for 2 or 3 years at least and haven't held up our end for building this rivalry. Baseball has been an exception tho....almost forget about them. Good rivalry there.

RE: WKU As We Transitioned
I think that we have a way to go before we start too much chest-thumping honestly. Yeah we have done a few good things and hung close in some conference games but we need more consistency and better game play. We are still very young program, with many lofty goals, but comparing us to the other programs is premature. Unless you compare our first 3 years to their first three years.

I was puzzled by the thread title.

So I looked it up on wikipedia

I think we should show WKU some support and acceptance for its "lifestyle choice."

I applaud your courage, WKU!!!

You go, girl!

Believe me, no chest pumping here. Just stating the obvious which is.. we've not been overwhelmingly dominated on the field by SBC teams since we began our move to FBS. Chest pumping about our football program won't begin for me until we finish in the top half. Until then, we're just a wannabe.
