WKU As We Transitioned
Don't want to stir the pot, but just wanted to lay out some stats I've collected. Take it for what it is.
Since WKU began it's transition to FBS we've had highs and lows, more lows as noted by nearly everyone here and especially by WKU fans but since we began our transition, WKU has only won 5 games (Twice over the MUTS, and once over FAU, UL, and ASU....and many times over ourselves). Remarkably, in our 22 losses, 12 of them were by a touchdown or less, another 4 were 2 TD's or less and only 6 have been blowouts.
Here's how we've faired against each SBC team: (We played 3 teams in our first yr of transition in 2007 and 5 in our second yr of transition in 2008).
MUTS (2007-2011) - won 20-17, lost 10-21, lost 24-62, lost 26-27, and won 36-33 for a record of 2-3.
Troy -(2007-2010) lost 17-21, lost 7-17, lost 20-40, lost 14-28 for a record of 0-4
UNT - (2007-2010) lost 26-27, lost 40-51, lost 49-68, lost 6-33 for a record of 0-4
FAU -(2008-2011) lost 20-24, lost 23-29, lost 16-17, won 20-0 for a record of 1-3
FIU - (2008-2010) lost 3-27, lost 20-37, lost 21-28 for a record of 0-3
UL - (2009-2010) lost 22-30, won 54-21 for a record of 1-1
ULM - (2009-2010 ) lost 18-21, lost 30-35 for a record of 0-2
ASU - (2009-2011) lost 20-24, won 36-35, lost 22-26 for a record of 1-2
As you can see above, WKU has been generally on par with this league since we started, except for winning....and yes, I know that's all that really matters. Our worst year of course was the disaster year of 2009 (our first yr as a full FBS member) but even then, we were in 4 of the 8 games. We recovered in 2010 by winning 2 of 8 but also being close in 5 of the six losses. The only game we weren't in last year was against UNT (lost 6-33).
Of the eight teams, only UNT and FIU have beaten us more than once by more than 2 TD's, both twice.
Here's another way to look at it:
In our 5 games with the mighty MUTS, except for 2009, the other four games have been close. We won 2 of those 4.
In our 4 games with the perennial power Troy, we were in 3 of the games, only being blown out in 2009.
In our 4 games with UNT, we were in 2 of the 4. UNT has our number.
in our 4 games with FAU, we were neck and neck in 3 games and beat them soundly this year.
In our 3 games with FIU, we were only in one game, last year's game. Other than that, they've had our number.
In our 2 games with UL, we were in the first game and took care of business last year.
In our 2 games with ULM, we lost by only 3 and 5 respectively.
in our 3 games with ASU, we lost by 4, won by 1 and lost by 4.
We WKU fans, many who visit here regularly, have been silent for quite some time. We typically only post to agree with everyone else about how bad we've been. We've had nothing to be cocky about until now. I think we've turned the corner on this program. I'm not predicting we're gonna win the conference by any stretch this year but folks, the non-stop "WKU is the worst program in football in America" stuff is a bit of a slam on the conference since few of you have dominated us on the field since we started our transition. Our loss to Indiana State (who is 5-2 now and has only 1 loss in the MVC, one of the best FCS conferences in America) was an anomaly and I think it may have been the wake-up call these boys needed. Since that loss, we have seen significant improvement each week and are now 2-1 in the conference. I think our boys are beginning to understand what winning is and how to finish a game.
I don't know what's going to happen this Saturday. UL is fired up and wants revenge and that's a powerful force in football. We'll see.
UL fans, come on up. Be safe on your drive up and back and have fun in God's country but leave with a frown. ;-)
