I see a lot of people talking about conferences expanding to 14 teams yet not explaining why a conference like the Big Ten would want to split their money among 3 more teams? The Big 12 is already trying to increase their revenue how is adding more teams going to help that? The SEC is already the most lucrative conference in America, how do they gain more money by splitting the money among 2 more teams? Same goes with the ACC along with the Mountain West Conference?

Only two teams currently make expansion to 14 monetarily feasible - Notre Dame and Penn State. And one of those two is already in a power conference.
However, the power conferences are very, very greedy and in their search for more $$$ they will soon set their eyes upon a very big pot of money out there that they are only getting about 21% from, and from which they feel they should be getting more.
And its a source of money that exceeds all of the football Bowl monies combined by about three times as much.
Cheers,
Neil

I don't see Penn State with the kind of cache required to dramatically increase conference TV revenue so that expansion to a 14 team conference is feasible. Now Notre Dame is another story.
But I agree with you 100% omni that a college football playoff is the mother lode that the BCS schools will seek in the very near future.

Don't underestimate the national appeal of PSU. Most years they are second only to ND - which isn't bad. A great Miami program was worth an additional $8 million to the ACC by themselves and they don't have the national appeal of the Nittany Lions nor as wide a market share.
And the pot of $$$ I'm referring to isn't a football playoff - but it is the real reason why there is no football playoff.
Cheers,
Neil

OK,
Are you referring to the NCAA basketball tournament?

Ding, ding, ding. Correct answer.
TV contract alone is worth 545 million a year. Of which the NCAA organization is basically funded.
If there were a football playoff, the NCAAs would take some of that money to fund their expenses, give more to non-BCS conferences, more to the lower divisions of football and free up more money from the NCAA tourney to be distributed to the schools - making basketball more profitable than it has been.
Cheers,
Neil

No major conference would ever expand beyond 12 without a major incentive. Forget that idea.
Just an aside: eldermars, you are one sick puppy.

The ACC would take Rutgers over USF anyday of the week and twice on days ending in y. Rutgers has a large alumni base and is academically superior in every way. The ACC is one of only two conferences without a third tier member academically. Rutgers is in the first tier. Besides that reason they already have 2 teams from FL in the conference. Also you'll never see WVU in the Big Televen. They are the other conference without a member in the third tier academically. WVU by it's charter has to admit any West Virginian who want's to go there.
I'm not sure if the BE will be the hunted in this case or not. The only scenario I can see Penn State coming to the BE is if they can remain a member if the B10's academic consotium, the CIC. The University of Chicago is a member who doesn't participate in the athletic conference, so it does have some precedence.

Why would the ACC trade Boston College for Louisville if markets are the reason for picking up BC along with BC's relationship with Miami? As greedy as the conferences are there is no logical reason to expand past 14. The only conferences I can see expanding in the future are the Big East, Big Ten (adding Notre Dame), and Pac-10. And only the Big East is a near given. The ACC, SEC and Big 12 have the perfect numbers to work with.

Louisville has a stronger basketball identity like the ACC. They seem to be a better fit. Maybe conferences will come to their senses and have more geographical identity.

Louisville makes as much geographical sense as Boston College in the ACC. And the ACC doesn't need any basketball help.

Maybe, but it still makes little sense for the ACC. The only reason they considered Syracuse and BC was because of markets and Miami. Virginia Tech is only in the ACC because of the pressure put on Virginia to support them, and the fact that they had to have a 12th team.

Acc football was down, FSU and Clemson are both in decline. So I believe the Acc added teams for the following reasons:
Miami gave them an elite football program and a mjor TV market.
Virginia Tech gave them a second elite football program.
Boston College gave the ACC a foothild in the Northeast and a major tv market.
So, it they expand to 14, it will be for market share in the Northeast.
Syracuse gives the New York City, New York State and New Jersey.
Pittsburgh or PSU gives them Philly and PA.
That's all they need to be the complete Eastern package.

Now that you've comprehensively addressed all possible scenarios strategic to conference realignments and provided succinct blueprints for implementation why don't you now solve the problems in the Middle East and develop a plan for immobilizing the Iraqi insurgency.
