Korcek still the information guy
Even though he's retired, Korcek keeps coming up with interesting information ala Harnish leading the nation.

RE: Korcek still the information guy
I've been swamped at work/home this week and haven't had time to read much online. I think I know the answer to this, but I'll ask anyway....is our current SID pushing this info out to the press?

RE: Korcek still the information guy
I think Korcek got a few digs in at the current SID and the SID office in his article.

Agreed he should step aside already and stop overstepping his bounds. I appreciate his past efforts and he has an outstanding knowledge base, but he is a has been and he needs to let the new SID make his own mark going forward.

Excuse me RitzHuskie but I don't hink NIUSAE's statement was meant for you to agree with and to suggest Korcek stop doing what he's doing. Why is he overstepping his bounds promoting NIU athletes in a manner the current staff doesn't? Your statement that "he needs to let the new SID make his own mark going forward" is evidence in itself. The new SID is in HER fifth year, so it's pretty obvious not much of a mark has been made. Quite frankly, question the current media relations operation with any reporter and the majority will let you know they do not have a favorable opinion. How can someone with "an outstanding knowledge base" be a has-been when it comes to promoting our athletes by making solid and legitimate comparisons to our past successes or those of other programs. As DiehardHuskie hit the nail on the head "I think I know the answer but I'll ask anyway...is our current SID pushing this info out to the press?" The stuff written about is simply an example of how our guys sometimes don't get the credit or respect they deserve. Yeah, Korcek got in a few digs, but are those digs accurate and justified? The answer is yes.
I hope Chandler and Co. find a way to beat Wisconsin and get us back into a bowl game so he can rewrite all kinds of records. Somewhere I remember seeing that former Huskie greats came back for a practice and Chandler was told by Bork to go ahead and break his records, he's had them long enough. That's what I like reading, a College Football Hall of Famer from NIU's past encouraging the current guys.

Overstepping his bounds?

This man, apparently knows more about Huskie lore and history than any 12 people on this board combined - myself included. It appears that he is writing for the Chronicle and has just as much right to research and relay information, opinions, etc. as any other media member.
A "has been"? You should be so lucky to have achieved in your career field what he has in his. If he's writing for the Chronicle - he's more of a "still is."
And if NIU's current people messed something up - well, at least now it's straightened out.

RE: Korcek still the information guy
She runs the departments like a media relations department should be ran in 2011. She knows her ****, worked at FSU, ran the Charlie Ward Heisman Campaign, worked at Tulane during the mess of Hurricane Katrina. Korcek was great at what he did and it's interesting to read all his history facts about NIU, cause there's not one other person in the world who would know **** like that.
But SIDs aren't supposed to be Stump the Schwab type historians, and I think some of you people on this board think that. Our media relations dept is run exactly like all the others in the conference and the rest of the FBS. There's is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Their weekly releases are great and the staff knows what they're doing.

The stuff on Harnish leading the country isn't Stump the Schwab material, and setting the record straight on NIU having been previously favored over Big 12 opposition isn't just trivia, it's trying to give our program the repect it deserves. Talk to media people around this area as opposed to Jacksonville, FL, and you'll get a different read on NIU media relations. When releases contain inaccuracies and lack research I don't believe they can be called "great." In high school journalism I was told to avoid starting an article with the word "the" and the vast majority of their releases on any of NIU's other sports all start "The Northern Illinois (insert sport) team...." Plenty of other posters on this board have mentioned the lack of editing and writing quality in game programs. Seldom do you find any of the other Huskie sport scores in the agate section of the Trib, Rockford, Daily Herald, etc., so the standards apparently have changed....for the worse.
Bottom line, yes opinions are like a-holes, everyone has one; and I'm certain you consider mine to be worthless and that there are more important topics for us to discuss. So here's hoping we knock off Wisconsin and somewhere there will still be a place to read Korcek's "Stump the Schwab" stuff.....like how the Huskies got booed soundly in Madison when Bucky the Badger got in the way of NIU taking the field and after getting knocked over, a Huskie coach kicked the head of the costume out of his way.

+1

With Media Relations here and at other schools, the #1 priority is no longer on working with and getting information to the media. Now, the most important thing is "controlling the message." Releases from Media Relations are a great way to do that, as opposed to releasing news to the media who, as part of their job, ask questions. Message boards present a different problem, because it's harder to control the message. That can be handled somewhat by having a Media Relations employee or other sympathetic person post on the message board.
