Big East looking for 12 teams in football

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- It's all about Nov. 1, 2012.

That's the date the Big East Conference becomes a TV free agent. The league's goal is to be able to present such a solid, far-reaching and valuable product that it lands a deal in the neighborhood of the $4 billion package recently signed by the Pac-12.

So when you hear Big East and wonder why schools such as Missouri, Kansas and Kansas State are being mentioned, think Midwest TV markets. Maps are just a piece of paper with lines.

With Texas A&M poised to join the SEC, the Big East is looking to add those three Big 12 schools and grow to 12 football schools and swell to 20 in basketball.

This is getting ridiculous, basketball-wise.

I wouldnt be surprised at all if the SEC and Big east have a tug of war over Missouri. SEC could very well go after Viriginia Tech soon after, as Tech is the most logical expansion candidate, that wouldnt face major opposition from conference schools

Wrong. WVU is the next target, or perhaps the primary one before Missouri. VT has spent all its political capital in-state to get in the ACC; they could not leave unless they take UVA with them. Additionally, WVU brings great basketball in addition to very good football, along with a substantial part of the Pittsburg market.

I think it would be possible that if the Big East became that big in basketball it may simply eliminate the non-football playing schools and leave them to start their own conference. Schools like Georgetown, Marquette, Seton Hall, Depaul, Providence, St. John's and Villanova may be left to start their own league perhaps poaching other schools from the A-10 like Xavier, etc. to form a basketball driven league.

That would be an epic basketball-only league.

If it happens, I imagine they hang on to 1-3 to balance Notre Dame and go to a 12/14 or 12/16 lineup. If I were them I'd hang on to Nova, Georgetown and St. John's.

USF
TCU
Louisville
Cincy
Kansas
Kansas State
WVU
Pitt
UCONN
Syracuse
Rutgers
+1 more(I'll get back to)

(non-FB)
Notre Dame
Villanova
Georgetown
St. John's

My question is this, Missouri is the obvious move if they're available, but if they go to the SEC, who takes the 12th all sport spot? Baylor? Houston? UCF? ECU?

Under your scenario, it would be UCF with Houston a close second.

Why not Missouri to the BIG 10 with Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State?

Several reasons.

Missouri would be accepted.

Iowa will not sign off on Iowa State.

Not sure if Kansas has the academics, I know Kansas State doesn't have the academics.

Even if none of the four had any hang ups, the Big Ten wouldn't make this move for several reasons, one they will not go to 16 as long as there's still a chance they can strong arm Notre Dame into joining as super conferences pick up steam. Furthermore, the Big Ten covets the east coast/New York. They will not go to 16 without taking one of Syracuse or Rutgers.

Kansas is a member of the AAU. Academics not an issue.

Wasn't sure, I thought they probably did, but I'm right in thinking Kansas State does not, right?

But I suppose it's irrelevant for the Notre Dame possibility and east coast desires that I raised anyhow...

I do not believe Notre Dame is a member of the AAU nor Nebraska.

Nebraska is the only member of the Big Ten that is not a member of the AAU.

Having said that, not being an AAU member is not a deal breaker(obviously as the Huskers got in) but it doesn't mean they'll take just anybody. Nebraska is a fine school, Kansas State does not have the academics...unless a lot has changed since they were building there program off JUCO transfers ten years ago.

Nebraska was an AAU member when they were invited, then got put out for not having the research dollars that the AAU requires.
