Like I said before, Temple and the FIU/FAU teams are wayyyyyyy before MTSU. When you get to be more than the third most popular college team in that market, you might have a shot.
Apologies...1.6 million I would say we are as popular as Memphis if not more so, at least during football season.
Memphis owns the Memphis television market, which is bigger than the Nashville market. MTSU is third behind UT and Vanderbilt.
Plus, even though Memphis only won a single football game last year, it was against MTSU.

Memphis metropolitan area
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Memphis, TN-MS-AR Metropolitan Statistical Area
Memphis, Tennessee
Population
Ranked 41st in the U.S.
- Total
1,305,946 (2009 est.)[1]
The Memphis Metropolitan Statistical Area, TN-MS-AR (MSA), more commonly known as The Mid-South, is the 41st largest among similarly designated areas in the USA. The metropolitan area covers eight counties in three states - Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 1,205,204 (though a July 1, 2010 estimate placed the population at 1,305,946)
The Nashville metropolitan area is a metropolitan area centered on Nashville, Tennessee, in the United States. It includes 13 counties in Middle Tennessee.
The Office of Management and Budget defines the metro area as the Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin, TN, Metropolitan Statistical Area, a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) designated for statistical use by the United States Census Bureau and other agencies. The area is the 38th largest MSA in the United States[2] and is the largest metropolitan area in the state of Tennessee
The origional city limits (pre msa) of Memphis has a few more people in it than Nashville. The Nashville market and msa is larger. You may want to get out of Memphis more. Congrats on your win against us. I guess it's something to hang your hat on but considering the result of the game before that and our overall record against you guys I wouldn't get too cocky. Be certain to come back after this years game. Even with our loss last year against you guys we still went bowling. I believe that's three bowls in five years.

Correct. The 2010 U.S. Census Bureau now puts the state capital of Nashville as the largest city in the state of Tennessee. Growing up as a kid 20 years ago, Memphis was always the largest city in the state. Not anymore. The 2010 Census made the following comparisons between it's largest city, Nashville, and its 2nd largest city, Memphis. These stats not only show that Nashville is larger than Memphis currently, but that it is also growing almost three times as fast as Memphis.
Population National Ranks:
Nashville #38
Memphis #41
Percent Population Increase 2000-2009:
Nashville 20.6
Memphis 8.3
Approx. Population 2009:
Nashville 1,582,000
Memphis 1,305,000

the city of memphis wins this one...
How in the world is New York City and Los Angeles not included in that ranking? Maybe those two were obvious and they just went down from there. Still, it's a good reason why Memphis' growth rate is so much slower. I'm impressed with how safe Nashville is for a city of its size. I've never felt unsafe there even in the downtown areas at night.

When Memphis thugs started targeting Katrina victims....that was the last straw for me. I grew up in and around Memphis....I'll never go back. I rarely even drive through there anymore.

It's been my experience that most Memphis fans haven't been to Nashville in a while. Yeah, not only is Nashville bigger, it will continue to pull away from Memphis. With the 840 loop going in a few years back, two pro teams, a huge recording industry and medical business base and manufacturing going like gangbusters Nashville will grow like a weed and has been for a while. Kind of the same thing happened to Atlanta; they put in the Atlanta bypass and people piled in around the periphery of the city because there was a quick conduit to work at a job around the same periphery. Drive along 840 from I40 to I65 and count the number of large production facilities just within eyesight of the road...and it's just starting. My wife and I are trying to move to Woodbury because of this crap...getting too big for us.

I just wish they'd finish 840. Without the connection at Fairview, it's basically useless.

It's useless to you...my wife and I use it all the time and the businesses and homes around it grow all the time.

They're already bloated so unless the football schools decide to break-away (which probably won't happen given Syracuse and UConn's closeness to the hoops schools) I can't see why they would want to add to this already convoluted mix.
As we know, they only added TCU (a shot-gun marriage if there ever was one) to remain AQ eligible. TCU's going to be a real shot in the arm for them; though the BE might get tired of handing the trophy over to them year, after year after year.
So no BE movement, means no C-USA movement, means no 'forced' Sun Belt movement.
p.s. I don't think the criticism of UConn is fair at this time. Weren't they a 4 loss champion going to a BCS Bowl? I think a lot of the casual fans probably saw the writing on the wall here and didn't want to drop the coin necessary just to see their team lose. Shame that the BCS cronies are so fixated on their own greed that they couldn't find a way to invite another, more deserving, non-AQ to the party instead.
I cannot see the Big East adding anymore all sports members, too much hassle where they are already.
Football only schools that are unlikely to ever want full membership would seem to be the pool they'd fish in.
