2011 Football: The Newcomers (Playing in '11)
This thread cuts across all of KPJ's threads.

My guess is that we'll see approximately 30 new players play at least one game in '11:

1). One transfer, Pollard.

2). Fifteen redshirt frosh (most of them should see PT or...).

3). Seven (I think) JUCOs.

4). Approximately 1/2 of the true frosh.

5). Maybe what one or two '10 roster players who sat out '10 injured. (I didn't count these in the 30 guesstimate).

Anyone want to guess which ones start a game in 11?

Which ones make the 2-deeps?

(I assume any frosh who doesn't crack the 2-deeps are redshirt candidates).

Maybe I should have turned it into kind of a poll:

Name the newcomers who will be start at least one game in September.

I'll go with:

Pollard and Cotton in the DB,

Cudworth at LB,

Henderson at DE,

Two OLs. I'm not sure I want to pick the names from the Spring game.

Maybe someone at the X back position.

Possibles: Brumfield at RB.

And my long shot pick: English lets Benz start the Alabama State game (English treats the first two games as opportunities to experiment with his newcomers, ala a NFL x-hibition game).

I would let Benz start at least the 2nd halves of the first two games if EMU is up say 17 points or more.

Backup QB needs the reps to be ready to play at a minute's notice.

Howard may be a weak opponent but I don't think anyone should overlook Ala St. They were 7-5 last year and were not too far behind EMU in the Sagarin rankings. They'll be fired up in Ypsi as EMU is their only 1-A opponent.

I doubt RE will "experiment" with starting Benz. Gillett is the starting QB and it's important to send your starter out at the beginning of each half. Gotta develop routines. Benz and the other back-ups will hopefully get time in these early games however.

I agree, 'Nickle, about Ala State but I just hope that a redshirt frosh isn't one play (an injury to the starter) away from being a starter.

Versus Howard, let the starters do the 1st series of the 2nd half and then put in Benz.

For those who have access to the ESPN Insiders they did a GREAT job on EMU.

http://insider.espn.go.com/college-footb...11-preview

I should have made my predictions of new starters based on this article.

Really nice discussions of who had a great sprint, which positions will be contested in fall camp, etc.

Very informative.

Steve, Is it possible to "copy and paste" the text of the article onto this forum?

I think either Reed or Scott for the return game.

I would go with Pollard in the DB as a starter.

I would go with Cudworth at LB.

Brumfield at RB.

Those are the ones I see making the biggest impact.

'79,

You are right on about the return game. Reed and Scott.

If I remember correctly didn't English have to have a punt returner fair catch balls?

I'm trying to remember who did KO returns.

English will get someone back there with 4.5 speed who can run.

If Brumfield can't break the 2-deep at RB, he'd be a great KO return guy, I'd think.

I'm curious if Tyler Allen is a candidate?

Sounds like Scott, Reed, Allen and maybe even Brumfield.

Remember Kelip Goodwin started last year as the KO returner, fumbled against Army and then was never back there again... I wonder if he get another shot

Welsh did several KO and punt returns. He had his good and bad days.

Ball security is top priority and it appears that that's what EMU has settled for recently. It would be great to get a return guy that can hold on to the ball and be a threat to break long returns. We haven't had a guy like that in a few years.

With all the JUCOs at DB I would hope we would be redshirting some freshmen at that spot. With all the JUCOs at LB what does that say about the 2-3 redshirt freshmen that are now available to play?

Note KPJ-what's the next position we should discuss in detail?

It says they better had been getting ready to fight for playing time. Are these redshirts any good?
