The Sunbelt Braces For The Fall Of Troy
It has to happen sometime. Does it happen this season? I think at worst we finish 3rd place this season. But with our coach being as old as he is, and the streak becoming tougher and tougher to continue, will this season be the end to Troy's run of dominance as we usher in a new longtime champ? I think Troy wins at least a share of the title again. So don't get mad Troy fans, I'm just playing devil's advocate and seeing what everyone's thoughts are.

Just posting an article I found as I am genuinely curious as to what people think. It won't last forever. There are much less topics about Troy this offseason than there are about UL bickering about name changes, ULM's financial woes, LA Tech, FCS teams and other worthless topics. Sorry this topic doesn't meet your standards.

I think Troy will slip up and lose a game somewhere in their conference schedule, and end up sharing the title with FIU or ULM. Maybe both.

I don't think a team will go undefeated in conference play this year; I either see Troy winning it outright or share.

We need a poll to determine if folks think there are too many "look at us" Troy polls.

RE: The Sunbelt Braces For The Fall Of Troy
Troy is too good to not be a major factor in the title this year and any years in the near future. Who knows, Troy could hit a skid, catch a few bad breaks, and not win or share the title for the next three years(I wouldn't bet on it) but the infrastructure, talent and tradition of winning is there that even if they went on a skid of three years without winning or sharing the title, I suspect they wouldn't fall as far as "middle of the pack" in any of those years. The worst I could see them doing is losing 1 or 2 games in conference any of those years and just so happened that another school was a game better.

I probably said the same thing about UNT years ago. It can happen.

When UNT crashed and burned in 2005 (2-9, 2-5), most folks had picked the Mean Green to win the conference AGAIN.

What was the reason for the sudden drop in 2005?

IMHO a lot of behind the scenes stuff including Dickey's health problems that had a measure of impact on him just losing control of the program.

RE: The Sunbelt Braces For The Fall Of Troy
The reason we collapsed in 2005 is a series of quarterback issues.
2001-2004, we were quarterbacked by Scott Hall and Andrew Smith. Smith was a year behind Hall, and would have been our starting QB in 2005, but he died in a car accident. The guy who would have taken over at QB instead in 2005 was Joey Byerly, a monster of a QB (he played H-back for a year while Hall finished up his career) who didn't bother to keep his grades up. Over the summer of 2005, the announcement came down that he was ineligible.
That left us with a series of difficult options (true freshmen, converted WRs, etc.). Ultimately, the job went to Redshirt Freshman Daniel Meager, a highly regarded prospect plagued by a series of injuries in high school and college. Meager missed all of spring practice due to shoulder surgery. He wasn't physically ready to play the position when he was forced into service, and he struggled.
People can say all they want about recruiting and playcalling or anything else... But when it comes down to it, we fell apart because we were forced to start a QB with no experience and an unprepared surgically-reconstructed throwing arm. That offense had 2 national champion rushers, Johnny Quinn and Casey Fitzgerald at wide receiver (to say nothing of Muzzy and a few others with names that aren't as impressive outside the NT universe), and a solid defense that looks worse statistically than it truly was because of how much time it had to spend on the field.
All we needed was someone who could execute our passing offense, but Meager hadn't had a chance to really learn it beyond the playbook due to his injuries. And the same medical injuries limited his ability to make some of the throws in that 2005 year. The offense was based on running the ball, with play action passes and deep throws to keep the defense honest. We couldn't keep defenses honest, and they stacked up and shut down Cobbs and Jamario.
So we had a terrible year, and a lot of issues behind the scenes finally went off the rails. When things started going bad, it all fell apart.
If Andrew Smith doesn't die, OR if Joey Byerly doesn't flunk out... North Texas doesn't go 2-9 that year. Smith would have kept us on top of the league, and Byerly would have gotten us at least 5-6 wins.

RE: The Sunbelt Braces For The Fall Of Troy
I'm going to jump on my high horse I guess and say; Wouldn't the Sun Belt Conference "Fall" just as much as Troy would if it did in fact fall. The SBC needs its premiere team. The WAC has Boise State, the SEC has Auburn/Alabama, and so on. Is FIU ready to fill that void? I personally think they can't. This isn't a shot at FIU or any other Belt team. I'm just asking.

if past history repeats than the belt would have a very down single year before another team stepped up
unT had the fall off in 2005, no team stepped up with the "top teams" being stAte at 6-6 and The University of Louisiana at 6-5 Troy was 4-7
it was not until 2006 that Troy started the current run
this year would probably not be the best year for the belt to repeat a similar history and the only year that might be worse would be next year with the new WAC in place.....not a good time to have a top team at 6-6 or 6-5 when shooting for "separation" at the bottom

What void? When is the last time Troy had a significant non-conference regular season victory? I'd guess there are plenty of Sun Belt teams that could match Troy's non-conference failures the last 3 years.
BTW - no Troy hate here - but you asked. :)
